Standard vs. Premium Sound

Looking for some feedback here. I spent maybe 5 minutes in 2 530's -- 1 with Premium Sound and the other without. Took a couple CD's for comparison. Music is a major part of my driving experience, so I'm stressing big time over this $1,800 option. Honestly, it didn't sound like $1,800 worth of improvement to me. I noticed a graphic equalizer + choices of 2 pre-set sounds (concert hall (?) & I forget the other).

Am I missing something? Is the standard sound system pretty darn good as it is??? Did I not give Premium Sound enough of a test??? Help -- I could use some feedback/opinions.....

I'm no audiophile and I think it's worth every penny of the $1,800. It really is a great sound system and I think you would kick yourself every time you got in your car if you didn't get it.

I would definitely get the premium sound it is amazing. Also spring for the Satellite Radio. I have had my car 10 days and barely listen to anything but the satellite. You will probably never use the 6 disc changer (especially with sat) but that sound system is far superior to anything I have heard in a car in a long time.

Spend the money on the Logic 7. You'll kick yourself later on if you don't.

If you have squeaks and rattles, go for the premium sound.
I didn't and now I'm sorry!

I have an appt. next Wednesday to bring it in.

I "fixed" the front passenger seatback from vibrating by slapping it a few times(right out of the service manual?).
The rear headrest vibrates and is quite noisy where the folding rear seatback mechanism is. I will go back there and see if I can "fix" it too.

It seems quite a lot of folks think I am asking for trouble by bringing it in to the dealer, that I will have worse problems than before.
So I am undecided whether I will bring it in or not at this time.

Get Premium Sound!

Don't make the same mistake I did - I did NOT get premium sound in my 5er. And I regret it. The standard sound is so bad - I'm surprised BMW authorizes it. In fact, I priced out installing a better sound system - and I was quoted $4-5K. Makes $1,800 look like a bargain.

My wife's 645 has the premium sound - and there is a big difference. (two subwoofers ).

Once you are driving the car - you'll be glad you got the premium sound.

This is very subjective. I am happy with standard sound. I mostly listen to news instead of music. Even when I listen to CD/MP3 music/songs, I also feel it's good enough. I usually don't listen to radio music.

My personal opinion is that although 5 is pretty quiet there is still wind noise and surrounding traffic noise. Under this kind of environment, you never get "pure" good sound.

I would rather put money on home theatre.

If music is very important to your driving experience, don't even waste another moment thinking about shelling out the extra bones for the upgraded sound, just do it. It is that good.

I got my 530i without the Premium Sound option - I TOTALLY regret not getting it. Please do not make the same mistake. Honestly, I think BMW should simply make the premium sound system standard (they can keep the 6 CD changer but do put in the system itself).

cheers,
suntan

If you can't hear the difference you either need to:

a) turn on L7 and set your equalizer
b) get your ears examined

Worth every cent buddy!

i am an audiophile and i completely disagree with you on this one. logic7 quality is, although not the best out there, but definitely A LOT better than standard. premium sound is already included in my 330i but even if it wasn't, i'd opt for it.
now, if it's worth the money is a different question. depending if you can get a better quality sound system for the same/less money custom installed or not. i don't think so though.

Stong data base and strong feeling

Wife's 330i has Logic 7, my 530xi doesn't. Once properly set, Logic 7 is worth the money. The 530xi sounds cheap in comparison. That being said, if we didn't have a car without and with Logic 7, I might not have known the difference.

I think I may have erred in my original sound test by bringing a CD with MP3 recordings. Does that make sense?

L7

I, too was disappointed with the L7 system initially. But after really learning the ins and outs and spending a few days fine tuning and adjusting, the differences between the standard system and Logic 7 REALLY become apparent. Not fond of the extra $1800, but do get the L7.
