550i owners, I give my respect.

I was at the second day of the local carshow, and BMW had set up a BMW Driving Experience booth where they had about 8 or 9 cars that you could test drive. I wanted to drive a 6er but one of the tires went flat, so the next best thing was a 550i. Man that car is fast. Really fast... "Get you in trouble" fast. It was an automatic but I took full advantage of the steptronic. What a car. The motor seems so dossile at low speeds, and stays composed at 6000, but just takes you away when you get on it, with each gear building more and more speed. It is amazing how quiet it is a triple digit speeds. I understand many people's gripe about I-Drive, as I couldnt figure out how the radio works, but I'm shure it is good once you learn it.

Yeah maybe. I was just at my dealer in Newport Beach and the M5 on the showroom floor stickered at $96k but the "Market Adjusted" price was $121k. The M5 can be had just about anywhere in the country for sticker and they're asking $25k over and getting it. I watched the last guy to pay $25k over at the dealer drive away in his new M5 - he said he'd return later to pick up the car he arrived in - a new f430 with paper plates! Ah the life....

My dealer has 3 M5's in stock, I don't suspect there is a premium on them, at least not $25k.

it's funny, another post was talking about the old 330 vs. 530 argument and how the extra 10k is not worth it.

Now we compare a 550 to an M5 at nearly double the price with premium markup and they seem to roll off the lot without a problem.

The 550 is looking like a hell of a deal about now.

How much are those new 550'S going for now? A 6 Speed Gearbox on that car would be pretty nice.

is your dealer Harloff? I was just there with my friend on Saturday as he picked up his new 550i, but they were about $25,000 mark up (according to him).

anyway, I drove his 550i back from the dealer and it was lovely. I didn't really punch it at all since a) not my car b) brand new with less than 100 miles on it. You'd never ever suspect that there's almost 5-litres of displacement and 360hp under there. I was always kinda up-and-down on the E60, but that car definitely sold me on them

Yeah Harloff, we shall see how long they keep the markup. 25% seems awefully high. I would have guess $5-10k

Agreed, the mark-up is pretty ridiculous, but they've already sold one of the three they had since last week. I guess for some it's just not a big deal. Gotta be the first to have the newest and coolest on the block

What a waste to pay that much for a gas-guzzling, quickly depreciiating 5 series. IMO what you're getting is additional HP that you don't need, a nicer interior and some ricey looking spoilers.

Isn't 360hp enough for ANY road?

That's odd! One can use the exact same descriptive phrases for my 2005 545 which I leased for 3 years at an approximate savings of $7000 over the 550.
Have you ever driven the 545?
I don't think a fraction of a second faster justifies the extra money IMHO.

It is all about economics, personal choice, finances, etc.

Can anyone really justify any car besides basic transportation such as a honda civic/accord?

Life is short, enjoy it while you can..

You are probably right as the 545i is such a sweet, sweet car but my decision to dump the 545i for (possibly) a 550i was made because I wanna do another ED due to the experience. This time around, my ED will last longer than 5 days and my wife will get to come along. I'm shooting for at least 4 weeks in Europe with the ED E60 (6 or 8? 6 or 8? hmmm....)

Hey reb03, I was just in Newport Beach 2 weeks ago, visiting family and that place is like an outdoor exotic car showroom. An M5 would fit right into place there and probably be as common as a Honda Accord here in NJ. I saw so many MB AMGs, that I couldn't stop drooling. Life is very good in Newport beach.

When I recently visited my brother, I drove his 545i SPORT for a couple of days and loved the power, handling and everything about that car. The rims on those thick staggerred tires are beautiful! I have to say again the power was amazing.

So I can't even imagine how much more amazing the 550i would be. Once you go 8 Cylinder engines, you can't go back to anything else. The pull and torque of the 545i is breathtaking.

When I came back home to my 530xi, I suddenly become depressed because that jolt of the power from the 545i was no longer there. I would be so happy with a just a 545i at this time and not even thinking about the M5.

M5 vs NASCAR

I bought my 2005 545 a few months ago and I have been impressed!

It seemlessly accelerates to 120+ mph without even wincing. Its a personal space craft I have dubbed the "falcon" becasue we have light speed.

PS - If i don't hit 100-120 mph 3-4x time daily... its a bad day!!! I set my speed limit warning indicator at 100mph, approaching warp speed, so i can smile =-)

I hate to think what the extra HP in the 550 or even what the M5 would compare to.

When asked to go to one of those NASCAR ride alongs (~170mph), I said no thanks, I have experiened ~140mph in my own vechile.......

I also know the Harloff guys. The mark up is on the M5s, not the 550s. They are selling those at sticker.

I find my 1997 540i 6 to be "get me in trouble" fast. I can't even imagine the 550.. Big trouble. 100hp is probably enough for pure transportation, but a part of the BMW magic is transcending "point A to point B" and creating an awesome driving experience. I'm sure the 550 does this in spades.
I can't wait to do a ED.

Just turned in my '02 540 6 speed for a new 550 auto with sport package etc. Even with less than 100 miles it feels very strong and starting to enjoy the I - drive (never thought I'd say that....) More later.
