I still have the new car thing going on here...... just expressing my feelings. I have heard of others being compensated by "big insurance" for having their car damaged (by no fault of their own) and causing it to be worth less than one that has never been damaged. This is why I lease cars. Once it has been hit, a really really good shop can only get the car to 80% of the original factory spec, that is it.

1. They don't dip the new panel in acid and paint the rest of the car the way that the factory odes it.

2. Ther ewill be somd blending involved. Meaning, the have to paint adjacent panels in order ot blend the paint on the new panel.

3. Normal good shops have no chemical processing capability and can only make sure that the replacement panel is free of eye detectable containmenant. The oil, dust, and whatever stuff that eyes can't see, they don't care.

4. It is impossible to get the right blend due to paint fading process on the rest of the car. Not to mention most shops don't even use Glasurit.

I can go on and on, but suffice to say that I think very lowly of the bodyshop/sinruance business. Not to say that ther earen't good ones, but most will cut corners to save a $30K job rather than totalling the car.

Okay, Stuka, obviously you are going to be more well-informed than the normal consumer of cars! I hope I don't have to sell you my car when its number is up!

This thread makes me want to cry! I had my 92 325 hit on the drivers side fender with a baseball last year. I got stuck paying the bill, long story. It sucks when people damage your car and run.

I brought it to a BMW certified repair shop, which supposedly garantees work for life of the car. They replaced the fender. Since they were going to "blend" the hood and the driver door a bit, I paid $500 extra to have them repaint the hood, which had 12 years of nicks from sand and rocks. Well, barely 1 year later the paint is chipping (a lot more than road rash does) on my hood. So, I plan to go back to the shop and see what they will do.

Moral of the story, if you love your car, it might be worth it to go to a BMW certified shop, so if something goes wrong, BMW should stand behind it!

This shop is Mercedes certified. The guy who will be working on my car is Mercedes certified "in Germany" as well...... how's that Agent99? ;-)

I've been driving a 2006 Black on Black G35 Sedan for the past couple of days....... I sooooo miss my e60. You tend to take it for granted until you don't have it.

Apparently I've gotten used to the Active Steering. While driving home from the rental car place I spotted a Starbucks and thought a latte' would be nice for the drive home... I pulled into their parking lot, turned the steering wheel the same amount as I would in my 545 and had to hit the breaks and crank the wheel to avoid hitting a parked car.
