Did you make sure whatever mystery brand you got is compatible before purchase?

Most people would read the manual, of course.

I have a Motorola V710 that pairs with my 525i with no problem.

What model phone do you have?

Any Bluetooth phone will pair up - but some may not download their address books. Make sure your phone has bluetooth - if it does you can pair it up at the next stoplight. Takes about 60 seconds.

Not at all correct. Only Bluetooth mobiles which support the required Profiles will pair - the ability to download the phonebook does of course require OBEX but naturally the mobile must support other Profiles, such as handsfree, which is not at all a given.

This does not sound correct to me.

My phonebook downloads just fine with my V710 that does not have OBEX, in fact it will soon be replaced by Verizon thanks to the class action suit.

In fact, the functionality of the phone seems identical to my Cingular V3 Razor.

From my research.. the only "fully compatible" Verizon phones are the obsolete V710 and the new e815. My plan is up in January, (planning to get a BT phone) and I would rather go with Samsung... but the BMW web site doesn't list any Samsung phones for any carriers!

this is true, not all bluetooth phones will work and there is an approved list of phones available.

The first batch of V710s from Verizon did not have any OBEX profiles. That is no longer the case (as you can tell because your directory is accessible by the car). The problem with Bluetooth standards is that each mfr. has tremendous discretion in what they can deploy within the Bluetooth ,,standard`` and still use the Bluetooth icon.

Here is a list of OBEX group profiles, so you can see the granularity.
GOEP Generic Object Exchange Profile
This is a profile group leader. It is a bluetooth version of the Object Exchange system defined for infra red communication. It basically allows devices to create directories and move files to and fro across the bluetooth link. Object Push, Synchronisation and File Transfer profiles are in this group, and depend on this profile for their operation.

OPP Object Push Profile
This allows you to send something like a business card or a schedule entry to another bluetooth device. This is the profile used for "bluejacking" pranks.

FTP File Transfer Profile
This is used to transfer files (bet you guessed that!) There isn't much to add about it, really.

SP Synchronization Profile
This is a bit clever. It is the profile that keeps records in step between two devices, usually triggering automatically as soon as there is a bluetooth connection, so the user doesn't have to do anything.

BPP Basic Printing Profile
This is used to send simple documents to printers, and they are printed as plain text.

HCCR Hard Copy Cable Replacement Profile
This profile takes printing one stage further, in that there is a printer driver in the sending device, and the document is printed with formatting and layout. Effectively, this replaces the printer cable!

Imaging Profile
This is used to connect image devices such as digital cameras.

HID Human Interface Device Profile
This is used for bluetooth-connected keyboards and mice. Mostly used for desktop PCs, this could prove useful for PDAs and mobile phones, when they support it.

LPP Local Positioning Profile
This is used to link GPS devices to transfer location data.

Right. I was speaking about current bluetooth phones. I was implying that if a current model phone with Bluetooth isn't on the "approved" BMW list, it will still pair up. I think some people don't realize that.
