So I sell the idea to my better half of purchasing the SMG because I want to shift gears and she wants an automatic. Imagine her surprise when the car goes almost to redline the first time she drives it and doesn't shift on its own. My question is, will the SMG work as an auto and shift on its own, and if so does the engine have to rev to redline to shift or will it work as a conventional auto and shift at reasonable rpm? We didn't play around any more as the car wasn't broken in and I didn't want to risk damage to the engine by revving it high.

SMG tranny has a forced upshifting feature, which minimizes the risk of over-speeding of the engine. It should have up-shifted for you. Are you sure she had it in Auto mode, and not Manual?

That could have been the problem. I thught that if the gear selector was in "D" that the transmission was in auto mode.

Yep, D is the Auto mode.

You need to take it off from Sports Mode when she drives the car big guy.

I tried just surreptitiously upshifting from the console for her so she thought it was like an auto, but the one time I forgot and the car revved to nearly redline she freaked.
