Mein Auto: Saab, looking for a 5er
New to me E34

Hello,

Recently picked up a new-to-me 1992 535i 5-speed. I've owned several 944s in the past so I'm familiar with older German cars, but new to BMWs. I was daily-driving a Saab 9000 CSE (which is for sale if anyone's interested) but really wanted to get back into a manual.

The car has satisfied my desire for a manual German-engineered sports sedan thus far to a great extent. Wonderful car.

However, I really didn't do much research before hand to the degree of which I researched 944s. Yes, I bought one with some extensive records and am taking into a BMW mechanic soon. But in general, I would like to know the basic tenants of owning an E34, basic and normal maintenance, cost of ownership, etc.

Just looking to hear and share experiences with these cars, as it's new to me and I'm fairly excited about it.

cheers!

Congrats-- you've bought what many consider to be one of BMWs best built cars ever (and one of the best looking)

Hi Smolder

I`m buying either a Saab or BMW 5 in the near future, but will probably go for the BMW. I wonder, could the BMW 5 compare to Saab`s comfort on longer journeys?
It`s the only thing besides crash safety that makes me think about SAAB instead of BMW.

You've gotten yourself a great ride! I have well over 200,000 miles on my '90 535I 5 speed. I've done a couple of minor mods to it, but good routine maintenance, and quality synthetic oils, will get excellent results from the best engine BMW ever made - The Big Six!

Safety wise, I'd put it up against anything contemporary to it from Mercedes, Volvo or Saab. It is also VERY comfortable on long road trips! Remember that these beauties came from the land of the Autobahn!

Enjoy yourself! I've had mine since '94, and I ABSOLUTELY love it to this day!
