Replace Stock Speakers?

Has anyone replaced the stock speakers? They sound pretty nice, but I bet everything could sound better with something else in the stock spots. I'm not really into a set of subs in the trunk any more, but I just wanted to see if anyone had done anything like swapping out the stockers for something else. How was the sound? Better than stock, or not really worth the time/money?

I am in the process of replacing the speakers in my 2003 sedan with RAC IQ which are supposedly engineered specifically for the E46 cars. This is a setup similar to what Bavarian Sound Works (BSW) offers, but without any vehicle-specific adapters, connectors and documentation - and of course with a smaller price tag.

I changed the rears already in about 30-40min and it was not "drop-in" as the RAC website promises. I had to cut the existing car connector and crimp on some new ones that RAC provides, which was not very easily done in the confined spaces of the rear parcel shelf. But with a little creative cursing, I managed to do it in the end.

The sound in the rear is now smoother, with far less distortion and a tighter bass (and presumably better highs). It is also at a slightly attenuated volume, which makes it difficult to cast a final vote without replacing the fronts as well.

As soon as I do the fronts, I'll post my thoughts and findings...

Another question. I have a six disk changer, but I want the ipod connector. Can I just take the six disk out and have a ipod connector installed?
