Question Sensation in steering wheel until engine warms

Noticed a weird coarse feeling when turning the steering wheel even if sitting still. If I turn the wheel left or right just a little or all the way it kind of vibrates or has a humming feeling to it.

I don't have active steering, and the feeling stops once the car is warm. Feels as if it is the power steering system.

I have a feeling my car was not prepped whatsoever by the dealer I bought it from. This tuesday it goes to Hendricks in Charlotte for Alignment, CIP updates, and possible nav screen as it keeps sticking on the BMW screen or blacking out.

Any thought greatly appreciated.

None except you will undoubtedly be quite sensitive to any little things happening in your steering feel from here on out! If you get a chance, try and drive another 550i.

It may be your power steering pump. . .maybe the fluid is low. . My old 323i had a similar problem.

Make sure you tell the dealer that you are not going to pick up the car until it is road tested by the service manager. Also, you may want to test drive it after repairs are made, as well.

Ace88, did you get your steering problem resolved? Oddly enough, when I picked mine up recently from the dealer I noticed the same sensation you're referring to. It's like a chatter in the wheel. I noticed it right away.

They worked on Comfort Access and did an update to the latest CIP. Does the CIP influence steering??? No active steering here, but it is x-drive. I'm baffled at this one, did a search of the forums & found this thread.

Anyone else dealing with this steering chatter?

They said the feeling I was describing was fine and that my fluid was full. They also said BMW would NOT allow them to update my CIP.
I'll keep you informed because my alignment has been corrected but it brought to light a whole new steering wheel issue.
See my last post in the alignment sticky.
Bye

My question remains...... DOES an update to the CIP have anything to do with steering (non-active steering, X-drive)?

Here's what I'm noticing ------- it's idle RPM related. For some reason my idle is just a bit lower while I'm moving with my foot off the gas. That's when I get the roughness as I turn. Simply, the ps pump isn't spinning fast enough. I'll check the fluid in the next few days, but it seems unlikely that the level dropped while it was in the shop. I wonder if it's a bad tank of gas?

I'll experiment and report back, but I think my idle is just a toch lower when engaged in D and letting the car idle on it's own, say in a parking lot.

Update:

My rough steering sensation sl-o-o-o-o-w-ly went away. I think it was related to the 2 weeks where my car was sitting at the dealer. It was there during heavy rains and I suspect some airborne moisture may have gotten into my power steering system. Is that possible? Just guessing, I really don't know. BUT... the sensation wasn't there before the car was sitting at the dealer for 2 weeks, and, whatever it was VERY slowly dissipated.

Hey there,
Mine is there everyday until completely warmed up. On the other hand the 2006 330Ci loaner i had exhibited absolutely no sensation through the steering wheel ever.

My guess is that the engine or power steering unit is causing this tingling vibration and coarsness.

Right now this is the least of my worries. The only real concern I have is the canted steering wheel and constant left/right inputs I need to make to keep the car between the lines.
