They listen for problems in their equipment

Audiophiles listen to their equipment for problems, loose connections, defective components and a myriad of things that could go wrong. They use music to listen to their equipment but sometimes they are just as happy using test CDs and test equipment. Even in concert and opera halls and theaters around the US and the world there are quarks and subtleties that wouldn't catch the ear of 99.999% of the listeners but bother audiophile-like attendees. I’ve attended music concerts at facilities that have inferior acoustics but the music is the thing. I can’t wait for the same concert to be played at a more favorable, acoustically correct concert hall – it may never happen.

Years ago in an audio magazine a self-proclaimed audiophile had just left a piece of his high end equipment at the repair shop for the umpteenth time. His friend gave him a ride but apologized that his car radio was broken but he had a small transistor radio they could listen to. The audiophile for the first time in years actually heard the music and ignored the equipment because it was so inferior to what he had been using. Instead of listening to the equipment he paid closer attention to the style, character and warmth of the musicians and the intentions of the composer. This was an awaking that didn’t prevent him from trying to achieve the highest level of audio playback but gave him added pleasure in having the equipment compliment the music rather than the music be a test tool for the audio components.

I ordered the Premium Sound system and I am very happy with it. I may connect some test equipment up to the Aux input and check for frequency response, etc. but one notch down at 100Hz, one up at 5K and two up at 10K suite me fine at the moment. I, like many others, can only listen to the music I like at the sound levels I like in my car. The concert hall setting provides a nice openness to the music that. Even with my home audio system I almost always opt for the “artificial” surround sound settings rather than the plain “vanilla” stereo. The surround settings in both the car and at home, I feel, are superior to the fabricated, and sometimes abstract and contrived re-mastering of music for SACD and DVDA disks.

There are a few items that BMW should address in the future and can be easily accommodated with only software changes:
1) Give some indication of the volume setting, maybe a scale from 0 to 50.
2) Have an option for setting the level of each source including the HD radio audio. This permit adjusting each source for similar sound levels.
3) More presets
4) Give the 6 disc changer all the features on the single, in-dash player – song titles, etc.

OK, time to get off my soapbox and go for a ride!

If you mean the iPod Interface, it would be a good idea to call your parts department in early July and find out when they are coming in. As a new product, availability might be constrained.

Just in case I am reading it right... The adapter for the ipod can be dealer installed after the purchase of the car that does not have it, correct?

Ipod

Hi-

I'm a bit confused. I ordered a 2007 530 xi. Will this come with the IPOD connnection already, or will I have to order an additional component to use it?

Thanks-

Doug

This is an aftermarket accessory. You have to buy it after you get the car.
