Was there any talk of totaling the car in your situation?
How was it handled with the tripling in cost? The body shop have any explanation for why it became so much more expensive?

I was even thinking of bringing my laptop to the mechanic to show him this thread and your pics/saga...I was hoping to have my car totalled.
But of course that is neither in the insurance nor body shop's best interest- only mine.
Not sure what to do atm...

Well, I guess it's no brainer that eventually your bill will be more than 22k.

That's the lame trick that body shops always do. Start low, increase the cost little by little.
When I was rear-ended though the body shops estimate was almost same as the final invoice. If I were an insurance company, I'd delete them from my approved body shop list if their invoice is more than let's say 15% of the initial estimate on average.

3x the initial estmate is asinine.

I can understand it going up X% once one gets in there and finds everything, but 200-300% is wrong...
