What stood out to me the most was that the guy never used the turn signal! Maybe that OK in the UK.

I see you are from the US (original poster). What you have to understand is that in the UK, there are over 457 versions of the 3 series and more are sold per year than the Ford Mondeo which is the quintessential sales-repmobile.

Here we have only a few flavors and no 4 bangers. Much more exclusive.

Possibly in other parts of the US that is true, but around here I see so many 3 series of all vintages that they are as ubiquitous as Camrys.

Certainly you see tons of 3ers on either coast of the US. However, when I visit friends in south-east Michigan, I see very few BMWs. Not that surprising though, since most of my friends' family are either current or retired auto workers (they do let me park in the driveway though )
