'99 540i6 Front Windshield Moulding GONE

The FL sun kills the moulding real fast. I purchased new moulding (@$45) and I'm afraid to have it replaced by "unskilled" labor. I have asked my BMW dealership to do it but they won't.

I have the same issue with my 540i and my front windscreen. At around 80mph I can hear the air whistle through it.

I took it while under BMW warranty to Stevens Creek BMW who promptly advised me it was because the glass had been previously removed by a non authorized BMW dealer and subsequently would not be covered by the warranty. I couldnt believe this absolute BS. How they could tell this from just looking at it even though everything still has the original BMW part numbers amazed me.

But its not surprising since this is the same company who charged me for repairs last November and then subsequently recharged me again for the exact same repairs in May.

To DaveF: Mine makes more noise at higher speeds too (as it's hard not to drive slow in the car). My rear window is now doing the same.

I'm going to have to break-down and it replaced soon as it is now hurricane season (TS Alberto just passed through a few hours ago).

I just sent my fourth email to Leonora.Vlaovich@bmwna.com and have yet to hear back regarding this rubber molding/gasket issue. Does anyone out there have another department at BMWNA to contact? Customer satisfaction email or phone number? I think this is common enough of a problem that BMW needs to stand behind their quality and address it (if they haven't before). Anyone?

I too have a deteriorating front windshield seal. The rear strip is fine. I called BramanBMW in West Palm and they want $350 to replace just the strip. The dealer said it's not covered since CPO doesn't cover rubber seals. Safelite will replace the entire windshield and strip for $400. I am too kind of wondering why only after 4 years the rubber started to crack, now it's at year 6 and it looks pretty sad. I have seen other E39s in Florida with cracked weatherstripping. I had a 10 year old Civic and none of the rubber seals ever dry rotted or cracked. I'm almost tempted to take a piece of rubber and send it out to a lab and have it examined. C'mon BMW what's the deal?

I've only sent 1 email to Leonora...no reply from her either in regards to this. I may go the McCandless route and try it out myself.

Turns out a long time friend of my dads is a GM at a dealership here in cincy. Long story short... He got me hooked up with the Service Mgr. and the Service Mgr. is looking into what can be done. I explained to both that serveral people I know (Bimmerfest) have the same problems as I. Also explained it isnt just concentrated to one specific year or climate range either. So when/if I get a tell all answer I will let you know. He is do to call me this afternoon.

I'd like to join the group. The winshield rubber molding on my 1998 528i has shrinked and cracked, I don't think it's leaking yet but I'll keep an eye on it.

Both of my cars have this issue. It is much more pronounced on 1998 528 which spent first half of it's life in Missouri (hot and humid). On the front rubber is brittle and it is especially bad in corners and passenger side is leaking some water around the windshield corner (pretty sure it is not sunroof). On the back - it is detoriating - but not that fast. And on my 1999 wagon it is better since it spent most of it's life further north but still not like it should be. I also have 1995 Dodge Neon ACR which spent most of it's life in Missouri and it's seals are in even better condition than on 1999 528iT. It is just amazing how BMW is willing to save pennies by chosing crappier and crappier materials with each year. I guess profit is the king.

WELL, I am PISSED!! My local dealership just called, after 3 days of keeping me waiting, and they tell me thyre not going to do anything for me... They just quoted me a ROUGH estimate to have the front windshield and seal replaced at $650.00!!! If you ask me that's totally unacceptable. Especially since its not just one model year, nor just one specific climate!! Who do we have to call? What kind of petition do we need to sign?! Who's d*ck ya gotta suck to get anything done around here?! Well ok the d*ck sucking will be disregarded.. But I want something done and I'm sure you guys want something done too!!

Hello,
I purchased a 97' 540i/6 about 3 months ago from someone who referred me to this board. I have been lurking the boards ever since and have got some valuable info from you all. It seems I finally found my place to jump in and contribute. I have been an auto glass installer since 1993. The first thing I want to say is that the "COVER" is a molding around the glass. It is there strictly for cosmetics.
If you are experiencing a water leak, you have another problem other than this cosmetic "cover" (molding). If you have an air leak, than you hav another problem other than the "cover" (molding). If you have a an air noise, it could be from your molding catching air in the wind stream. BTW "cover" must be a BMW word for it, but from here on out I will call it a molding (it will be easier for a glass shop to understand what you are talking about if you decide to have it fixed).

My guess is that the front is getting dried out more than the rear by the blistering air from driving.

If you even think your windshield has been replaced before, I don't recommend spooning in the new molding. I can almost guarantee that you won't have sucess(unless someone used very little ureathane/glue)

For the member who said he used silicone, I hope that it was not silicone that you used. Silcone traps moisture and causes rust to form. More so if your windshield has been replaced and the technician left behind any bare scratches(even if you can't see them.

Be carefull who you use to replace your windshield because it is considered more of an art form than mechanical. I could go on and on with this, but if you need something, just ask. I plan on changing mine soon as I get some time. Not broken, just pitted. If I find some editing software I will record it and post it. With some of the projects I see you all get into it will definatly be a breeze.

I take forever to type so i'll wrap this up.

O yeah, unless the technician took his time, most experienced techs can look at a BMW and tell you if the windshield has been replaced before even if it has BMW glass in it.

Well that's bad news (about the "stealership" issue) for all us.

I broke down and spent $200 for a car cover to protect my car from the elements (mostly sun here in FL). 20/20 I should have got it years ago.....

It's a pain in the a$$ to take it off and stow it / replace when done driving but it keeping the moulding from disentigrating at a faster rate; as well as the interior. I recommend that all of you give it a shot.

Speaking of the interior, does anyone know how much it costs to replace the "touch" wooden panel that covers the cassette tape/audio controls that's just below the a/c vent. The sun's effect has cracked it in many places.

I just checked and both the front and back moldings for me are fine. I believe the back window was replaced at some point before I purchased the car, however my front window is definitely original since it still has the warning decal on the upper left corner.

Anyone have any luck with BMWNA? Is there a number we can call? I just think its strange how so many of us have the same problem... All different years and all different climates/elements... Anyone else find it odd?

Well, no luck with emailing Leonora...I've gotten radio silence from her unfortunately. I was even hoping for at least a "Sorry, we can't help" email but I haven't gotten that either.

I have a good acquaintance at an individual BMW mechanic shop and I emailed him this thread. He actually took a stroll around his shop and made a few mental notes about the cars he had there:

(1) Only 5-series show this problem. All 3s and 7s look fine...from all years. He even had an 8...looked fine.

(2) He found E39s from 97-03 in his shop. About half had the problem, the other half looked fine. He also noticed that the shininess of the material looked different between different E39s, regardless of year. I can't remember if the shinier stuff was holding up better than the non-shiny stuff (or the other way around).

He said the part number has remained the same for this all throughout the E39's years but certainly the manufacturer could have changed several times (and presumably, the material could be different, too).

See the thing how is that we are all making personal inquiry of this somewhat "coincidencial" problem with the E39. With Agent 99's contact/discovery of

If we can find statistically how many E39's out there, has this problem we can create a formal complaint, and or lawsuit. But the big thing even WAY before we get to those is that we get a significant ammount of people: Name - VIN - Year - Model - Address. Then we have somewhere to start.

We gotta have numbers by our side for this to work. Sorry boys about the pessimistic attitude. We need the numbers!

the "Gummi-Pflege" does seem to work well, i can really see the rubber absorb it, you apply two or three costs with the built in applicator. Give it a try if your rubbers are not too bad. If they were bad, I would be doing the DIY cover swap.... in Chile the dealers would never even think of responding to this...
