1998 323ic convertible top - tension bow

A few weeks ago, my top stopped working properly. Specifically, when trying to put the top down, the top releases from the windshield frame and lifts up, but the tension bow does not rise immediately after. Looking at the schematics posted on other threads, it looks like it could be a problem with microswitches S1 or S8 or the top motor itself.

Has anyone else had a problem with this element of the auto-top operation? I'm just trying to pinpoint the problem before tearing apart every access point to the top, the motors, and the switches.

Ugh.

OK, so I figured out that someone pulled the manual top release, dropping the top drive motor out of the gear assembly. It's hinged. How do I secure it back up into the engaged position? Is the manual release bracket the only thing that holds it up?
