E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Mein Auto: buying a 1 series
buying 1 series auto - need advice please

Can anyone help,

I really fancy buying a 1 series automatic (my first Beemer, very exciting) but none of the local dealderships can get hold of a test drive for me.

My concern is with the Steptronic gearbox - will it behave like a 'normal' automatic, i.e. have 'grab' and hold itself on hills, in traffic etc.? I had a Peugeot on loan recently that had a similar gearbox but had no 'grab' at all (I had to use the handbreak instead) and I hated it.

Can anyone reassure me?

thanks,
gemma.

Not sure about the automatic gearboxes, but if they are similar, it might be
easyer to find a dealer with a 3' series automatic you could testdrive. ?

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip - I did try that but the only 3 series autos around in the dealerships seem to be 330s, which wouldn't really give the same feel as the 118 I've got my eye on. Apparantly "no-one buys automatic BMWs with small engines". No-one but me then...

I bought a 120d M-sport auto on Monday, suits the diesel perfectly.

The bmw auto box is great, I have it in my 535d sport touring too and would only buy a manual in a sports car now, would have to be an M car if it were a BMW, but even then the SMG would be my preference.

I would try and find a 120d auto, the 118d is only just enough with a manual and the step does suck a little life out any engine. There are a few about, so search autotrader and make a few calls. I got mine down from 22k to 19750 with one phone call. My local dealer was useless, would only knock 500 off a lower specced, older car with more miles on it at 23k!!

Thanks guys. I'll have a serious think about upgrading to a 120 but I feel reassured.
