go to autozone and get the error codes read. SES lights indicates a problem with an emissions related component. Could be as simple as a fault gas cap or as serious as blown cat converters.

Dont own a BMW , but have owned Mercedes ML 430 and it had a SES light. It is a reminder to change the oil.It calculates by your driving style/conditions,oil break down, oil temp. etc.

There should be a way to reset it after changing the oil.Try doing a google search for resetting service light on x5.

Hope this helps.

I found this for you......hope it works.

Turn the key ON (all the way) but do not start the car. Press and hold the trip reset button for about 10 seconds and the central display of your instrument cluster will first show you the oil service, release the button, press and hold it again and the word "reset?" will appear, release the button and press it again until it shows"----", relaese the button at that moment and let the car recalculate the new value. Once it shows the new mileage value of the next oil service, press and release the button again and it will take you the front brakes and so on. Repeat the above procedure for each component.

sounds like a problem with an oxygen sensor. i doubt resetting your computer will fix it, and it def wont make the service engine soon light go away. you gotta get the obdc thing reset. go to any mechanic they'll do it for 20 bucks, but yeh get the codes read
