Strange security system quirks... can I just remove the alarm/anti-theft system?
I have a 1994 BMW 530i and it is giving me some trouble.
Very strange problem... Ever since a couple of weeks ago, my car will start flashing the hazard lights alternating with the headlights.... kind of a car alarm deal - but there is no sound, just the flashing lights. This happens when the key is removed from the ignition. When I put the key back into the ignition it stops. I don't know why this is happening but needless to say it is pretty annoying. I found a way to make it stop which is pulling the fuse (number 21, I think) that controls a portion of anti-theft apparently, but this also takes a few other things down with it like my radio and the glove box light.... (and even MORE strange now, is when I open the glove box, the hazards come on) :P I have a feeling the problem would have something to do with the fact that I have a custom stereo system installed. I seem to recall a wire running to the stock radio for anti-theft but I did not have any such use for it with the new stereo. The wire is just sitting there not hooked up. But it doesn't explain why I had the stereo in there for half a year and just now I start getting this quirky problem. Any ideas what could be wrong? I wouldn't mind just ditching the whole security system as I don't really need it too much where I live... Thanks in advance for any help. |

Dont think that you can just take it out. If fuse 21 solves the problem you could try tracing the wires further down and just disconnecting the one that is attached to the security sys. The right way to go about it would be to start tracing the electronics schematics in the back of your bentley manual (hopefully you have one). With the fuse 21 and glove box problem it shouldnt be too hard to track down.

Hey, thanks a lot. That's simple but good advice.
I followed the wire back to the security box using my Bentley manual and apparently there was another fuse which basically is suspended between the wire. So I just removed the fuse and taped each fuse terminal off, then popped my original fuse back in (which is actually fuse 18, I forgot because I took it out weeks ago). Problem solved, I've got my radio back as well as glove box light and some other things and I didn't have to even cut a wire. Sweet deal. |

Sounds good. Not really a fix but I suppose it will work. Test your electonic bits to make sure they all work correctly and carry the fuse just in case.

Yeah, I've got the fuse in the glove box and everything seems to be working good. I don't care about the security system anyway, I've wanted to disable it because it just yells at me when I disconnect the battery and all that stuff.
