service engine soon. 2002 m3. a few questions

Service engine soon light just came on. 2002 m3 with 35k miles, enspection 1 was completed at 30k about 6 months ago and oil is at good level. "service engine soon" light just came on after a good 30 minute harder then normal highway drive. (Car was warmed up the proper way)

since my car has the 6 year 100,000 mile warrenty, if I bring it to a bmw dealership they will they charge me to just look at it?

Assume something is wrong will they charge me for the work ?

also the light came on, is there is a chance when I start it up tom. mourning the light will not be on? it just popped on due to a hard drive?

Diagnostic of service engine soon is free, at least mine was Saturday. My 330i had 66K miles, and the problem was the exhaust chamshaft sensor, at a tune of $273. At least the dealer provided cappuccino and slushies while I waited.

thats good to know. the light came on about 3 months ago and the next day it was gone. I will bring it to a dealership and ask. I was just checking here first.

also since if the issue is engine related it should be covered under warranty as well

It is most likely an emission issue. Most times it is a loose gas cap. It will reset itself after a number of fault free cycles. THis is a good reason to buy a Peake tool. You can read the codes and reset them yourself.

There is a separate light for the gas cap...

I have an 02 with 24k, just an FYI your 6yr/100k engine warranty was most likely due BMW Engine Rod Bearing Failure, and their technical Service Campaign extended those engines that were affected to 6yr/100k miles but not to exceed 6 yrs from the time of purchase. You having a 01, maybe has expire/if it hasnt already done so.

Also, from reading other M forums, the engine warranty that was extended is limited to failure for components that are oil related. If it touches oil, its covered, is the explanation given or Ive read.

Also warranty if for ONLY the oil lubrcated parts of the engine. Cam position sesnor would NOT be covered.

umm

well today, as I was going to the dealer, the light went off. I drove the car for about 20-30 miles going across the gears and different speeds and it didnt come on.

LOL!

I hope it doesnt pop up again

about 3 months ago the EML light went on, I turned the car off then on again and the light was gone.

I am not sure what car my m or my AMG has had more lights going off and on....

Make sure you tighten the gas cap. That is more then likely the problem.
