Thanks for the reply! Seeing this list, though, makes me realize something I didn't before, so didn't articulate -- I guess what I was hoping to discover was non-chain places that only the locals know about.

Topper's Pizza Place, 520 Arneill Rd (map) is another really good eatery with a salad bar...

The food is as close to home cooked as you can get at a restaurant, and the people are very friendly. Just don't be in a rush, as the place fills up quickly on weekends, so you might have to wait a little while. While waiting, I strongly suggest a chat with the locals. They are very friendly.

They have one in T.O. too (@ Moorpark / Janss). Very popular. If it's like the one there, you'll have plenty of time to chat with locals while waiting for a table.
