New X5/E70 Black Plastic Bumpers

What is your opinion of the new X5's black plastic bumpers?

I hate them ...... in fact it's my only disapointment with my new X5. After four weeks, I still can't get over it, every time I view my SAV from the back i'm disapointed. The irony is in 2004 I ordered an X3 within the first month of the launch, by the time it arrived I cancelled the order and got a new 04 X5 instead because I just couldn't get over the black bumpers on the X3 back then. Fast forward, I now think the X3 has a better looking rear bumper than the new X5. I know some might think the black bumper is practical, but in my view not very appealing to the eye. Even putting aside the lack of paint on the bumber, the overall bumper design is subpare in comparison to the outgoing X5.

I agree with you. If I want to play bumper cars, I'll do it in something that cost less than $50K.

To the folks who say the trade-off in looks is worth the practical aspect, why not just have the entire car made of black plastic to avoid door dings?

I hate that as well....infact the body skirt in our older 7 series (E38) only came in black...up until 2000....and they changed it to the car's body color in 2001, but us having a black car..it didnt really bother us

But I understand your frustation....I think that blk bumper thing just looks cheap

I agree that they would look better painted, but the new X5 is still a great design.They will probably put the painted ones on the 4.8is when it is released.

I agree about the great design overall. My poll question was limited to only the black plastic bumpers. I hope you're right about the "is" version. Even if the unpainted portion was smaller like the old X5.

I agree, the black bumpers look cheap.

Why the hell would BMW put black plastic bumpers on a $70k truck? Hell, even my brother's old Jeep Gran Cherokee was $40k and had the bumpers painted from the factory.

Probably made them plastic so they could make them body color for their next revision.

That's what they did with the X3 too.
