Overheating 318

G'day Bimmerfest
i know there is a lot of info here re my problem but I have not got the time to go through all of the posts lookiing for specifics.
My 1997 318 has started overheating recently, mainly at idle. I have sat in the drive with it running to see if it will get hot and had no problems, but got to the drive thru and the red light comes on. As soon as I get moving it cools rapidly. The electric fan does not seem to be working properly, yet if I turn the Air Con on, the fan starts. Is it likely to be the fan or could it be a faulty thermostat (that is posessed and opens and closes of its own free will). The heater seems to take ages to warm the car and seems to be barely working at all. Help me !!!!
Cheers

All indications point to a clogged/broken thermostat. Try that first then look at the water pump next. Good luck.
