The difference between standard and premium sound

I bought a used X3 and am not sure which one I have. I continually hear about people not being satisifed with the "standard" system. How can I tell if I have the premium system or not?

I know I have 2 speakers in the front door, 2 in the rear, and 2 under the front 2 seats. The deck is a business single disk stereo.

Anybody know how to tell? Does the standard system have the two speakers under the seats?

yes, they all have speakers under the seats. the main difference is that the speakers are better in the premium sound equiped cars.

The technical difference is that the speakers in the front and rear doors are called "Component Speakers" in a "premium system" rather than a full range speaker (standard system).

The standard uses a full range speaker-- essentially one cone that is delivered the entire audio spectrum from bass to treble. Not very good.

The premium uses a component speaker system that has two speakers in each door (rather than one). One to handle the hi end (tweeter) and one to handle the mid- range and then the ones under the seats are to fill in the lack of bass that are impossible to reproduce with such small speakers mounted in the door. A little better.

The speakers are not really better but are able to reproduce higher frequencies (treble) more accurately.

No. The Premium sound has DSP. So if you press the Tone (music note) button and see DSP as one of the adjustable settings, then you have premium sound.

Or if you have Nav and Premium sound you'll have a DSP menu in the Nav system.

Or you can simply look at the grill in the door and see if there are two speakers instead of one.

A little 1 inch and a 4 inch mounted on a diagonal to each other.

I am a bit of a sound fanatic, but if the system sounds good to you it doesnt matter if its standard or premium.

And if it doesn't then ask away I have improved the entire sound system ten fold without any cutting, permanent, or irreversible changes.

I'd love to know what you did with yours. I just picked up my '07 X3 tonight from a private seller. Has 4500 miles. The ad said it had premium sound, but it doesn't. I'm in the process of selling my '01 540 w/premium sound package, and right now, I'd rather keep it and sell the X3. I'm not an expert by any means, but I know what I like in my car stereo, and this ain't it! Help?

BTW, here's my ad for the 540. It only has 45,700 miles.

This may differ from what the X3 has now, I don't know.

When I bought my '05 the Standard system had 8 speakers, a midrange and tweeter in each front door, a midrange in each rear door and two subs under the front seats for a total of 8 speakers. Premiun had 10 speakers. The difference was another tweeter in each rear door for a total of 10 speakers. Premium sound also came with upgraded (higher power) amplifiers.

I do have DSP but do not have NAV. The one problem I have with the Premium system is that there is an equalizer in there that is only accessible from the NAV screen. Nobody told me that, nor did it mention it in on the BMW website I do have the Church, Jazz and Rock pre-sets though.

Can anyone with Premium sound and NAV tell me if that's all there is to the equalizer? Those three pre-sets? Or is there an adjustable equalizer?

TIA!

There is an adjustable equalizer in my Nav screen. Also an option for Room/Echo, which I haven't figured out what it does yet. Not very happy with my premium sound system, but perhaps I haven't played with it enough to give me the sound that I want to hear.

Equalizer

In answer to the question, the Prem Sound with the Nav gives you the ability to set up several custom enviroments. Each enviroment can have differing equalizer profiles (levels in different frequency ranges), a reverberation setting and room size setting. There are factory presets for cathedral, concert hall and jazz club built into the system. In practice I have set up custom enviroments for different music and listening programming.

Thanks dohmer and vrrooom

I would have liked to have those features. If I had known about them when I ordered my X3 I may have reconsidered getting NAV. I'm still pretty satisfied with the Premium sound system but sometimes I think it needs more midrange. I guess if I get an '08 I'll get the NAV this time!
