How hard do you need to slam the trunk?

Nightly, when I walk into our garage, the lights in the X5 trunk are on. My wife isn't shutting the tailgate hard enough, even though it appears closed.

She claims the lock is out of adjustment.

I claim she needs to put more power into her close.

How hard is it to shut (and lock) the rear tailgate on your X5?

The X5 lift gate definitely requires a good slam to close properly...

Sometimes, you might think it is closed (but if dark, you can see
that the interior lights have stayed on)...

Many a battery has been drained on the showroom floor by unwitting shoppers and Client Advisors...

Most high-end cars (even my Passat) will shut down the electrical system if there is no activity on the car after 30 minutes or so (the 'brain' assumes a door is left open). That is strange the trunk lights aren't on the same logic.

Maybe it is deliberately designed that way for tailgate parties?

They (BMW) must have omitted that feature from their
sofware logic.

Surely, a BMW owner would never (accidentally)
leave a light on, or a door ajar...

My Touring hatch is pretty hard to shut. More than a few times I got into the car to notice the hatch ajar in the dash.

I dunno about E53s but E46s will shut the lights off after 15mins even if the hatch is wide open.

From what I've heard and experienced, it partly has to do with the air pressure in the cabin. Tell her to leave one of the doors open when she closes the tailgate. I've found that it helps! Also, the alarm won't beep when locking if the tailgate is still open.

Not hard at all....the rear hatch needs to be adjusted so you don't have to "slam" your rear hatch in order for the lights to go out....I had that problem at Day 1, but my dealer fixed it.

I used the same amount of effort to close the rear hatch as I do with the front doors....

By the way, on my X5, the rear hatch lights eventually go out after 30 min or so if I leave the hatch open.....I was unloading stuff from the X5 into the house and left the rear hatch open for 30 mins and the rear hatch lights went out and same with the interior lights.....

Hey, my rear lights go off after 30 minutes also. That is good news!
