Talking 2009 X5 5.0is

Spy photos: First shots of upcoming BMW X5 5.0is

http://blogs.edmunds.com/Straightline/3302

BMW has been pretty adamant about not making a Motorsport version of the X5. As far as it's concerned, an SUV is not the proper basis for an "M" vehicle. That hasn't stopped the German company from making hopped up versions of previous models, however, and the next high performance X5 looks as though it could be the fastest one yet.

We've heard rumors of V10 power, and this prototype appears to confirm them. According to our spy shooters this prototype wasn't making V8 sounds as it ripped by on the streets of Munich. If this X5 does indeed get the same V10 powerplant as the M5 sedan, expect a few tweaks designed to add torque for the heavier SUV. Also worthy of note on this prototype are the four exhaust tips and giant tires.

With most of BMW's attention focused on the launch of the M3 and 1 Series coupes early next year, we donít anticipate U.S. sales of the BMW X5 5.0is to start until late 2008.

I think this is dumb. The M5/6 get around 12MPG. My friends 07 X5 4.6 gets about 13MPG.

A V10 X5 is going to be around 8MPG. The car should be banned in the US along with any car exhibiting motorhome type gas mileage.

There will not be any X5 M version. The pics on that link are of an X5 "is" test mule testing V10 engine for X6. BMW does that often when they test engines. They recently tested next-gen X3 engine on a 3-series touring. They also did this with 1-series.

I think you may get the turbocharged 4.4 litre V8- when is the question.

X5 "is" version is coming later next year. We have already seen the test mule with X6 style painted bumpers.

I think if I remember correctly, it will be 2X2. I am sure one can comfortable fit 2 X 3 if they so desire to.

You drive a 750 and a 650 and your want to ban these OTHER gas guzzlers?

Do we know any performabnce numbers (HP, 0-60, etc) for the next generation 4.8is? Also, will there be a 7 seat version like the 4.8i? Thanks.

No details yet but speculation is that the X5 performance version will probably have "performance tuned" TT engine from X6 50i. So it will be better than X6 Xdrive 50i Details on X6 engine in this thread post #48.

8MPG = Stupid.
I like fast cars as much as the next, but there is a level of irresponsibility.
Then again, my car got 8 MPG until I broke it in, and the 4.4 and 4.8is E53's both got the same F.E. after the facelift... hmm...
