Recently bought a 2008 x5 4.8is with the 20inch rim package - beautiful car, but noticed that I have already burned 1qt of oil in 1600 miles and now at 2800 the oil level already started to decrease. Is this normal? Anyone else with similar experiences in a 2007 X5?
Someone please help! |

Yes! My oil level too was, "as per iDrive, DANGEROUSLY LOW." I brought it my dealer and they said that it was low a "few" quarts, but that it was normal.
For a car that does not need an oil change for an extended period of time, this does not bode well for the reliability.

if I am not using the BMW oil products...are there any that are recommended? I have been putting in Mobile 1 extended performance (full synthetic)

Will the engine consume less oil as time goes by?

I am now at 3400 miles, did not need to put any more oil in.

I have 4,000 on my 4.8 and oil level seems fine. The only warning light I got was the washer fluid as they must never have filled it when I got the car and I seldom use it.
1.5 gallons..I thought I had a line leak.

Did anybody do an oil change after the break-in period of 1200 miles? My '08 4.8i has 500 miles and still shows full oil on iDrive.

Mine has 9800 miles. It has not had an oil change and I have not had to add any.

A few words of warning.... "the filter won't last as long as the oil".
I've seen many threads on the E46 (3 series) where oil changes were being done at 7500 to 10,000 miles with high end synthetic and the filters were basically destroyed when they went to change them. This raised a lot of concern with fellow BMW owners. Many DIY mechanics recommend changing the oil and filter between 5000 and 7500 miles regardless of the oil condition. |

Anyone have any directions for oil changes on a 08 x5? New to this vehicle and want to change my oil...never did a BMW type filter change?

I was told by my dealer that there is no need to change the oil after the break in period. That said I did change it at 3,000 but either way it will be on your own dime. Actally about $100.

BMW's recommended oil change intervals are ridiculous IMO. I'd have changed mine at 1200 if I had the car then, I did change at 3000 and will again at about 8K and every 5k after that. Use BMW's oil for the oil changes, good stuff and no potential issues with warranty work-extra expense not much and worth it. Problem for DIY's is the lack of dipstick. Drives me crazy but no choice. If you got accurate info on amount in car then you'd have to make sure you fully drain it then carefully add the right amount. Of course, the dealer's probably not going to divulge the info to you but I'm sure it's obtainable from someone. Hopefully you don't overfill it. As far as the original posters questions, my X5 4.8 has about 4800, no loss of oil-at least not enough to register. If break in time was limited to stop and go driving, oil consumption will probably be greater and some is not abnormal even in a modern BMW. For example, my wife's 530 took one quart about every 5-6K miles as she only drives around town. My 330(same engine) never seemed to lose oil but I properly broke mine in and mostly highway mileage. Losing two quarts or more in that span of time seems excessive to me. It's possible the rings didn't seat properly during break in period and that's a problem for long term. Jeff |
