335i coupe, or E46 M3 ???

hi, guys,

I really like the design of the 3er coupe, and 335i certainly is a potent car. But given the choice of buying a 335i coupe, vs. a 05-06 M3 (perhaps with ZCP) 6sp manual, which would you choose?

335i would be a better daily driver, more forgiving, etc. but the M3 is a special car for sure. Appreciate any input

I just sold my e46 m3 and bought the e92 335i. If you want to hear and feel the raw power, get the m3. 335i got the performance but it is more refined. Also, maintainance cost for the m3 can run pretty high. 335i got factory warranty.

You are correct on all points and the last one is the decider and you're gonna have to be the one the make the decision. It really is about which kind of car you personally would rather drive, from what you seem to indicate by your last point, on a daily basis.

How do you feel about driving a car with the "rawness" of the E46 M3 on a daily basis? Will that rawness wear on you over time? Or would you be happier with more pleasant daily manners that also comes with push-you-back-in-the-seat power?

+1!!

You'll have a great car either way! Good luck.

I'm sure the phrases "one wheel wonder" and "overweight lux-o-barge" would have come up a few times by now.

Easy... M3 by a long shot... Obviously it's going to be bias in this part of the forum duhhh. But the main reason is because well it's a better car withOUT fuel problems . I'm just kidding guys, get the 335i so that when I finally get my M3 there's just a bit more of them out there for me to look at.

As a current owner of E46 325 with sports package and current 335 with sports package... No Comparison in reguards to techology and ride of car. The power hp would be about the same for the 335 and e46 m3. Get the new car will full warranty and you will not be disappointed.

I was curious about this statement, and like I thought not true. My M3 still holds a higher re-sale value than my 335i. So actually the M3 will hold its value better.
The 335 has 7 thousand more miles than the M3 but I made them the same for this comparison.

I think you will be happy with either car. But I'd choose M3 if it's convertible. Otherwise, 335xi or convertible. But that's my own preference.

I don't mean to take over the whole topic, but I just want to know how your s2k is as daily driving? I'm comtemplating to get s2k before this summer.

New 335i faster than old M3. If you get the older car I'd SC it or something, to avoid having some east coast college kid walk you in his new 3er

I don't post here that much but, It is funny that i noticed all the 330,328 and the 325 owners say the M3 and all the 335i owners recommend the 335. It is like lower 3 series owners don't like the 335i guy's on these forums.

cheers,

cheers,
I think there are some possible reasons.

1) E9x have open cockpit where as e46s' cockpit is more driver towards. (I like the idrive screen on the e9xs tho)

2) Turbo engine on e9xs seem more chemicalized than natural.

3) More mod parts (engine, interior, exterior) are available

4) Engine start button on e9x - I like it, but alot of people prefer the key in start.

5) Alot of DIY exists in the forum for e46s and more information towards others experiences are posted in the forum. more resourceable than e9x. (I could be wrong)

6) M3 brand. Less M cars on the road, more 335i's on the road. It is more sportier, but it can backfire by getting killed from non-m car.

7) No Idrive

and for the users who prefer the 335i are opposite of 1,2,4,6, + more below

1) New turbo engine.

2) more luxurious

3) convenience of idrive

4) full factory warranty

5) new look

I'm sure there are more and some can be biased, but I don't see comparing m and non-m car as apple to apple comparison IMO. I think the both cars are top of line on each other's class.

Funny you should bring this up as i have been looking at used m3 convert vs 335convert....i have recently test driven both extensively, the 335 with paddles and the m3 conv with smg 2 as a recently severe ankle injury prevents any manual clutch use for at least another year...we have two very different cars...the 335 has a much stiffer chassis so it feels so much more solid and better planted, the m3 conv has a great deal of cowl shake and feels almost junky over big bumps...handling is pretty close but i have the edge to the 335 because of its stiffer chassis...the 335 is more more roomy inside where as the m3 has a more intimate interior...the 335 has slighty more supportive seats...the steering feel equally good with both...of course the 335 has more torque down low but the m3 revs amazingly well, and acceleration is equal....the m3 is much more noisy inside with a rough ride vs the 335, the 335 is much more comfy for long trips and for highway commuting...overall its close but for me the 335 more all around competence wins out as it can toe to toe with the m3 performance wise and still is much more an everyday car..cost wise, an m3 conv , perhaps 05 can be had for mid to upper 30s, cpo, but a even a slight used 07 335 conv will still be close to $50k, so i am still trying to talk myself into the m3...also , keep in mind if i was looking at coupes, the big difference in chassis rigidity would be far less and perhaps the m3 would shine more...

Went through the same thing

I spent 4 months going back and forth on an m3 or 335i. Spent a lot of time reading these forums. All were were very helpful, but you will know what to buy when you drive it.

For me... I like the way the m3 drove. IMO you are more part of the car. I use it as a daily driver and have no complaints. It's just different. I came from a 2006 325i (e90) with sport package and manual and before that a 1999 323i. I was ready for something different and the m3 drives entirely different than a 335. Both are great, both are fast, just drive them.

Also... it was the fact that in 3 years I can still buy a 335i new or used, but time was running out on finding an e46 M3 in great shape.

Good luck.
