Angry $700 for $0.10 plastic sunroof thingy

I replaced the left clips on my sun shade but also found the “driver” clip (roundish plastic clip found just in front of the rear left sun shade clip – see pic) to be FUBAR.
I have looked up several sun shade DIYs and have not found one that addresses replacing or, more important, where to buy this piece. I went to Baron BMW in KC and showed them the pic and they said, quote: “You’re out of luck. That piece is not part of the sun shade and is not available.” He then said for me to get it from them I would have to order a whole new mechanism for $700 – real nice!

Obviously I can scour salvage yards for a E46 but that is not really how I want to spend my time. I have not been able to find a part number as the clip does not even show on the schematic at realoem.com. Does anyone know where to get this part?

Many thanks!

I don't know of him but a quick net search turned up Jason Reighard in Maryland. Is that the guy? Well, this guy's title is BMW Internet Parts Specialist so I might as well try him. ---E-mail sent!
I was really suprised that Baron BMW was no help at all.

If anyone else has a suggestion I'd love to hear it.

Thanks!

I would try and find out if that part is included in the sunshade repair kit ($100).

Man that's funny. I like free but I want the car in perfect condition. Speaking of free...

Thanks for the input but don't get me started on "the kit"... I need one part and I can buy a whole new unit ($700) or pay $90-$100 for an upgrade kit. BMW can kiss my @ss. They put out this completely crappy mechanism - they should be sending every owner a complementary kit with a case of beer. It's not the money I just hate playing ball on issues like this: I need a 10 cent part...

OK, I sound upset but as I'm hitting the twisties on the way home I'll be all smiles. LOL

After several more dead ends I have decided to take my Dremel and a few of my son's Legos (probably blue and white) and I will fix this damn thing myself.

This should be amusing. I will post the much anticipated DIY!!!
I hope BMW will be happy to learn that I've had to resort to gluing Legos to my car!

Sweet, a man after my own heart. When you don't want to spend money, melt plastic and make it fit.

Not sure where you are located, but have you tried checking junk yards? I'm sure there are plenty of e46's out there that are wrecked and have that part. Just an idea...

Point taken, and that is what I should do, but... rather than dealing with the traffic to get there and then sorting through the nasty U Wrench It lot - I am happier just griping about it online and then trying to fix it myself.

I usually wouldn't go hacking parts on my car, but 1) this mechanism is junk anyway and 2) it almost seems that the clip is not needed except that w/o it, it will slip over the rear shade clip and fowl things up. So my mission will be to model a part that will keep it from slipping over the shade clips. I have already started to document my project and I will post my activity with my pass or fail results.

I'll also let you know if I do find the part at the junk yard in July after the sun melts my Legos!

Meantown330i – That simply isn’t true; a replacement shade driver is available, but it’s part of a repair/upgrade kit. There’s an SI that addresses the issue. The number is S.I. B54 05 06. The kit costs approx $85. The BMW (kit) part number is 54107134072.

I hear you! I learned about "the kit" online after leaving Baron BMW and then I couldn't believe that they didn't even mention it to me at all - FACT. When he told me I was out of luck he said to try a salvage yard. I told him you've got to be kidding. Then I asked how much if a guy absolutely has to get one and he said you can buy a new system for $700. After getting back to this forum, I found info about the kit.
However, like I said before, BMW can shove the kit! I'm not paying 85, 90, 100, whatever to fix that ridiculous, crappy mechanism. The money is not an issue, its a piece of junk and they should own up to it - I would.

This is not the first time I went to a "BMW Professional" for help to find that they know less then one could learn in one day reviewing this forum.

Here's a link to the e46 Fanatics forum for a thread on this topic with part numbers and descriptions. I need to do this fix too.

http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...t=sunroof+clip

They have an extensive list of DIY topics there.

I'm sure there must be one here too at Bimmerfest. And here it is:

Thanks Sun but neither of these address obtaining the driver clip. We know there are four clips on the shade - they are easy to replace and cheap to buy. The real issue here is that you seem to be unable to buy just the driver clip (not directly attached to the shade). Oh you can pay 80 - 100 and get one in the hardware kit which I refuse to do for a $0.10 piece that I would expect to pay $5 for just because it's for a BMW - lol - but I'm not paying $80 when I feel those kits should be complimentary...

Take a look at this diagram here. Are you looking for #16, part # 54138246027 ??

If so, you can get it from Tischer here for $5. It's still more expensive than it should be, but $5 is better than $100.

Thanks much for checking! I wish it was part 16... Part 16 in the diagram is the left side shade clip. The "driver" clip for the power retractor, for some reason, does not show up in this diagram. I am really suprised that I have yet to find a post that addresses the driver clip specifically...

What does the repair/upgrade kit include? Also is there a way to see the SI that you quoted? My wife's 325XI sunshade just broke (haven't pulled it apart yet).

Here ya go - split into three parts to get under the max file size. Not as hard or complex as it might look. Did mine about three years ago. If there is any good news, it's that this is a permanent fix.

Thanks for posting the PDFs VSTOL! So I see on page 1 that you get a whole new slide driver and I am guessing that the new one has the clip that is shown on page 5 (labeled "2") - the part I need...

I'm sure I'll be doing this update this summer after my legos melt - LOL - but I won't be happy about the $85, however I can't leave the car flawed either. Thanks again!

Read my sunroof diy in the bimmer wiki, I go over everything! I bought the kit and your piece is in there. I took a photo of all pieces in the kit. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=222850

Not exactly - indeed, the kit includes a new shade driver but it's very different from the original. It's been completely redesigned. Likewise, the "slide elements" are also different. The screw hole spaceing does not match the original sunshade.

I guess I won't need to fix this myself this time. (I will keep this in mind if my M3 breaks next)

After reading this forum I talked again to the dealer and mentioning the S.I. B54 05 06. All of a sudden decided they WOULD cover it under CPO. Depending upon what broke, they will likely now do the whole upgrade kit. So my 325Xi is heading to the dealer first thing in the morning.

Already love this forum! Saving me time and $$.

VSTOL, where can you get it for that low ?
I've only found it at once place online (ecstuning.com) for $105 (and I suppose I also need a new shade as I read somewhere the gliders holes don't line up!)

Tischer BMW ( www.getbmwparts.com) has it listed at $88.74. But of course that's exclusive of shipping charges. No idea if you can reuse the original shade with the kit.
