Weight of the trunk lid enough to shut the trunk once it's pulled 1/2 way down?

There are recesses in the bottom edge of the trunk lid to pull it down. Once you get about half way down, it is weight of the trunk lid enough to shut the trunk? Or do you need to push the trunk lid hard to shut it?

I am asking this because I haven't taken delivery yet but I want to know and plan ahead. Thanks.

Actually, depending on the weather, if you give the inside-panel door handle a good tug with one hand, the trunk lid ends up closing fully on its own. Works like this on many BMW models.

So just give it a good tug from the top position, It should close.

The weather does seem to affect the strength of the gas shocks. It's easier to pull down when the weather is cold, but even during the summer, the difference is negligible.

There are recessed handles to grab to close it. I have to slam mine to get it to latch. If I don't, it only partially latches and shows as an open door on the dash lights. Quite annoying and once I believe it drained the battery, since the rear cargo area light stays lit.

I just went out and tried mine, 04 X3, if you let it go about about 3/4 of the way down it will close and latch. Isn't it funny, It's something you've done 1000 times and can't recall how it reacts I had to go outside in the drizzle and try it.

The struts on our '07 are still new.. The lid won't latch by gravity alone.

We have to pull the lid down by the handles and then give it a push on the roundel to get it to latch.

I find that most of the time the hatch will swing down, closes and locks, but every now and again I have to give it an extra "slam" just to make sure the door open light doesn't come on. It could be the weather but I have had it happen both in the summer and winter, although our winters are pretty mild here. For sure it doesn't have the self closing that a Caddie or S500 trunk does.

Ours will close pretty much by just gravity when it gets half-way down. But we have the extra aero kit piece that goes across the bottom of the lid.

Keep in mind this is European engineering, and they as a rule don't "slam" car doors/hoods/lids shut. This is why letting it fall on its own from the 3/4 down position, as opposed to 1/2 way down, seems to work better. Continually shutting European (or Japanese) doors too hard is counter-productive, whereas domestics seem to accept it well. If the trunk lid doesn't want to latch consistently when dropped from the 3/4 position, just gentle hand assistance should do it. If it doesn't latch and the lights stay on, as pointed out, they should automatically go out after approx. 15 - 20 minutes. If they don't, the main "sleep system" is suspect.

Just did a quick test on my 2007 hatch. The hatch is roughly 1 ft open before it wants to swing down to close. At that distance it will not latch securely on it's own. It will close, but not fully latch, unless I add some momentum to it. I tried it 10 times. All ten with the same result. Not fully latched.

Now that's European engineering....

I'll keep slamming it until I whine about it to my mechanic.

205 trunk lid needs a little help to close.

Very similar to MJS' testing. My 2005 X3 trunk lid doesn't close on its own. I have gotten use to giving it just a little push when it is closing to shut without a slam.

I think I should go around the dealership, closing the tailgate on each one to test for quality control and consistency on the strengths of the door shocks.

I just press the button inside the left side hand hold of the hatch door and it power closes on it's own.

j/k

I open/close mine 2 or 3x daily thru regular routine. Just giving it a bit of a downward tug (using either hand hold) from the halfway point results in a solid thunk and fully latched gate.

For safety reasons - I don't think the engineers intended it to slam closed via gravity from any position.
