Go to bmwusa.com and read all about it. iDrive is a centralized control system that includes sat nav, audio, vehicle settings, service, phone, and numerous other functions operated by a single control knob in front of the center armrest. It has been a controversial and signature element of BMWs since it was first released on the 7-Series in 2002. iDrive is all-new on the 3-Series and several other BMW models for 2009 - the first major overhaul of the system since its release in '02.

Just talked to my SA at reeves in tampa and he said that they havent even been given a release date for the new Idrive. All he knows is that the 7 will have it first and the initial run for the 09 3's will not have the update. He said the major hardware diff are "dummy" buttons surrounding the toggle for those who didnt take the time to learn the voice command short cuts. Personally I love my Idrive / Navigation. I have the blue tooth intergration and I just downloaded my phone list to it. Makes life soooo much easier.

I'm pleased with my Idrive/Navigation system.

However, I am guilty of not learning the voice commands. I need to do that.

I don't understand why so many people complain about iDrive, I think it is great. You just have to spend some time and learn how to use it. it's not much more complicated than a TV remote....hmm....but then again....some people have trouble with TV remotes.

Anyone know what buildweeks will include the new iDrive in the 09 3 series?

Compared to similar systems employed by Mercedes, Acura, Infiniti and especially Audi, iDrive is terrible.

I'm fine with it, but since when have anyone ever expected "just fine" from BMW? We expect the best and should get it.

Mercedes, I don't think so, that's a piece of crap. (The one I used anyway) Acura is one of the best I've played with. Audi and Infiniti, don't know. My wife just picked up a new Nissan, so I will find out.

I agree that Mercedes "COMAND" isn't as nice as IDrive. Audi's is nice, but I think IDrive is fine! Also, there were some things about the Acura system I found counter-intuitive, where with IDrive I got the hang of it right away.

I kind of like the Mercedes system when I played around with it while test driving the C350 a few months back. It is definitely inferior to the Infiniti G37's system that I played with but I found the Mercedes system to be pretty good.

The new version of COMAND on the S-Class and C-Class is quite good, better than iDrive and on par with Audi's MMI. The previous version still used on most other Benzes is pretty awful, much clumsier than iDrive.

your SA is a tool. The buttons are equally useful as the voice control. The news is that new 3er's WILL have it... your SA is an Uninformed tool also.

wyb, are you sure that all of the '09 3er's destined for the US will have the new iDrive? Where did the rumor that the early models will not have it start? I have a Week 37 build and am wondering if my car will have the old or the new iDrive.

As I mentioned in another related thread, I cannot imagine early '09's not coming with the 'new' iDrive - the manufacturing changes, such as the new trims would present an absurdly costly second line change when the new system is ready. If the new one will not be available on early builds, then I would expect option 609 to not be orderable at all. However, if the new system (screen, CCC/CIC, controller, etc) is plug-and-play and easily switched with the old iDrive without any interior or other hard changes, then I could stand to be completely wrong.

My advice is that no one should order a car if he or she does not know what features it has. Would you order a computer, or an appliance, or a house if you didn't know what features were included? If you sign a contract with no information about those things they can give you whatever they want, and you have no recourse. Get it in writing before you sign the purchase order.

For me, it's not a deal breaker. I've been happy with the old iDrive, unlike a lot of folks and I like being able to update the maps via DVD. The new system may perform a little better and have enhanced graphics but I am not unhappy with the current version. Either way I am fine.

+1 The current iDrive does offer a lot compared to other car brands. The new version is nice but will fall short. If you look at the new controller and buttons, they left out have a couple programable. I know there are shortcut buttons which can do everything the new controller can and more by programming the buttons.

I don't understand some of the new controller buttons. Seems like they duplicate the controller. They already dumbed down the controller by removing the haptic feedback, not I bet the controller will do even less.
