Mein Auto: 2002 530i
2 Weeks - My 328i Impression

Couple of setup points:

1. First BMW owned was a 2002 530i
2. Was very frustrated with the 530i so planned to trade it in
3. For the first time ever I considered other "luxury" cars and looked at Audi
4. I had a price point in mind which opened the door to certified pre-owned cars back to 2005
5. After much looking, test driving, and spreadsheets I had it down to a 2005 545i that was loaded across the board (heated steering wheel, iDrive, iPod adapter installed already, etc.) and it was my favorite color combo (Ti Silver with Black Interior) and a 2007 dealer demo 328i. The 328i was Motego Blue with gray interior, had the cold weather package, no iPod integration pre-installed, no iDrive, no usb connector, but had every other option.
6. I chose the 328i, though it was close

Initial Impressions

1. Yes it's smaller, but I'm surprised at how much space there is. I only really feel/see the difference in the rear width. It makes getting a person and 2 car seats in the back impossible.

2. It's way more nimble than the 530i and the 545i. Left to right, side to side, etc. just more nimble.

3. I hate first gear in the 328i. When I pressed the gas in the 545i and the the 530i the car took off from the go. The 328i has a slow, seemingly useless 1st gear, but then climbs from there quickly.

4. Gears 3 - 5 on the highway are a blast. The car takes off and loses little control or stability.

5. It's noisier than the 530i and the 545i, especially wind.

6. The AUX in is nice, but not having the USB be standard on all models is silly. And the cost for the iPod kit is highway robbery.

7. I haven't experienced any of the noise issues associated with the Run Flat Bridgestone tires.

8. Not having a spare tire is stupid, simply stupid.

9. The instrument cluster is so much smaller...but it's nearly 100% digital so it looks nicer. I do wish there was a dimmer for the display.

10. I dig the push button start, but wish I had comfort access so that the car opens, starts, etc. without having to plug/put anything in.

11. Bluetooth is fantastic. Using my iPhone via the Bluetooth connection was easy, painless, and works perfect.

12. Cup holders, while better than the 530i, still suck. Why is it so hard to have a center console one that isn't buried inside the console?

On the whole I'd say I'm satisfied. I don't think I gave up much in size, but I did give up a lot in technology.

Congrats. Great write-up. I took delivery of my 2008 Montego Blue 328i a little over a week ago. I agree with most of your comments, but I'm assuming you have the Step. I opted for the 6MT. This car is a blast to drive (yes, I also drove a few 335's but opted for the 328 anyway).

Knock on wood, but the 328's seem to be very reliale with no consistent issues like HPFP.....

Pg. 78 in your Owners Manual. Low beams on - use your top left control stick to select lighting display. Adjust as desired.

Well it would have been nice to have:

1. iDrive
2. Navigation
3. iPod integration already installed
4. Active Steering
5. Parking sensors with the camera

I'm not saying they are mandatories, but very nice. Keep in mind the 545i and the 328i were priced exactly the same.

On your list #9 , The display can be dimmed by using the button on the turn signal stock to select this option.

#3 do not use standard first gear - move shifter from P to D then immediately move left.

What he is saying is to go from Park to Drive, then slide the shifter to the left posistion and this will enable the tranny to start from first gear as opposed to the second gear in normal Drive. When posistioned to the left in sport mode this will also allow you joystick(front and rear movements) to change gears in a manual fashion without the requirement of a clutch...difference here is; the ECU will not allow the driver to over rev the engine in MS mode.

Hope this helps and certainly by no means am I putting words into "Joe's" mouth but this is what I feel he is stating in the prior posts.

Good luck and nice purchase! I have a 06' 330i that I love but its in for service and they gave me an 08' 328i...big difference in power but for the most part all things the same...just much slower.
