Possible Replacement Chip/MOSFET

I have ordered 10 Smart Highside Power Switch replacements (i.e. different manufacturer/part number) for the BTS425L1 for my '95 E38 LCM. They can be ordered in any quantity and they are only $1.98 each if you order 10 (I think they are $2.24 if you only order 1). They should arive next week so I will let everyone know if they work okay. Although I am confident this replacement will work; I am purposely not providing part numbers/sources yet until I have tested the "chips" on my LCM.

For those of you not familiar with this terminology, previously these components have be referred to as "chips", but they are actually "smart" MOSFETs (field effect transistors) that provide an "open output" signal back to the LCM's processor to signal a blown bulb.
These transistors can be replaced on the board without having to reprogram your LCM since the repair does not replace the onboard processor.

I have not compared this replacement to the spec sheet for the "BTS426L1" Smart Highside Power Switches; however if these work for mine, I will seek out a low cost replacement for the BTS426L1 and post it.

No worry...

I wouldn't worry about it until it fails...
I'm not even sure if your model has a Lamp Control Module (LCM) or if the one you have even has these transistors on the circuit board. You would either have to remove your LCM and take it apart to find out (and risk damaging it) or preferrablly catch someone on the board who has the same model/year and same problem. I definitely wouldn't remove it and take it apart without it being broke (too risky and costly if you damage it and can't repair it).

The good news is, that if these ones that I've ordered work as expected, you can buy them at any time for cheap $$$$ compared to the almost $400 price tag for a new one and dealer fees to program it to match your vehicle.

I can even recommend replacements for whatever transistors someone might have on their particular model if not the BTS425L1...but let's make sure this brand works okay first.

Update

Good news and bad news...
I received the mosfets; however, they were the wrong configuration (i.e. short pins and no heat sink). The good news is, they are resending the correct configuration mosfets, but I won't get them till later next week.

Will keep everyone informed.

Great News...

Anyway, if anyone wants to know, I received the Smart MOSFETs chips and installed them and they so far work perfectly. These are replacements (i.e. alternate manufacturer) for the Infineon (Siemens) BTS425L1 Mosfets which drive the high beam headlights in the E38 Light/Lamp Control Module or "LCM".

These chips can be purchased from Mouser Electronics online at http://www.mouser.com/ by ordering part numer VN750-E. You do not want any other configuration/part number. This has the same pins and heat sink as the OEM part. These chips can be ordered in any quantity so noone needs to stockpile them for others on the group.

Mouser also shows this chip as a replacement for the BTS426L1; however, I only installed it as a replacement in my E38 for the '425L1 chips so I can't testify that it works. Although, I do not see why it wouldn't work.

Good luck.

P.S.
These VN750-E chips only cost $1.89 each and less if you order 10 or more! And NO, I don't work for or own stock in Mouser...

I just received the VN750 and the BTS426L1 chips. I plan to do the repair over Thanksgiving. I will probably have 10 left over, so if anyone needs some, let me know.

hey guys, i order 4 original INFINEON - BTS426L1 from farnell (uk) , after 3 weeks of crazy waiting time and a reiculous charge of $30 of shipping i got them! installed 2 in my e39 97 (528i) and my LCM works like new! no more flickering light, nor permanent right high light beam on, i have 2 extra chips cause minimun order is 4 (you only need 2) due to my ridiculous shipping charge i would sell them for $20 each= $40 + $3 for shipping , be lucky and get them in like 3 days is stead of 3 weeks let me know if someone wants them.

Mk 111 LCM

On my 1999 E38 the lcm is a Mark 111. (Without the protruding heat sink)
The problems it shows are as follws:-
1. No instument panel or heater control lights.
2. With the ignition off, no parking lights.
3. When I turn off the ignition with the headlamps on the headlamps go out as normal but the parking lights stay on for about 5 seconds then go out.
4. The 'light you home' feature does not work.

I have checked all relevant fuses are OK. Can anyone shed any light on which component(s) of the LCM could be causing these problems that I should check, and if possible how to fix them.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

If you have a paypal, I would prefer direct buy. However, I would buy from ebay as well. It may give others confidence if you sell them on ebay and they can see your ebay approval rating. I am in for 2.

Can anyone answer a possible LCM problem? I have no turn signal or high beam indication on my instrument cluster but all the lights on the exterior work fine. I have no exterior reverse lights and my MIB (some people my call it the radio) does not work. From internet research it seems like it may be my LCM. What do you guys think and if so could it be fixed with these parts you guys are talking about? How can I determine which "chips" are bad?

Well I just got around to making the fix on my LCM with the new Infineon chip. It worked like a charm! My high beam on the passenger side is now working just fine. Thanks to cn90 for making the group buy for the chips. Also, thanks to j39 for his good tips on removing the LCM. One tip that I will add.. If you are a novice at soldering, you are better off taking the device to an electronics shop. I tried to do the soldering myself, but unfortunately, I almost screwed up the board. My soldering tool and soldering wire just weren't the right tools for such small components. Anyway, if you don't feel comfortable soldering, find a local TV repair shop. I found one and they charged me just $15 to do the job the right way.

rverma,

Glad I helped you save money. You are a smart man (you know your limit and took the LCM to a TV shop! BTW, is there such a thing as TV repair shop any more, I thought we throw electronics out when done?)....

Re: BTS426L1. Does anyone know for sure if VN750 and BTS425L1 are substitute or not?

so can you visually see the damage on the board of the lcm? are all the "chips" the same BTS425L1 that you guys speak of? seems like the lcm controls a lot more than the headlights but all you guys are fixing is the headlights. can other problems be fixed as well?

Ok, well, I already ordered the new chips from Mouser so no need for those. Could someone please point me into the correct area to find the LCM ? I've gleaned from earlier posts that it's beneath some carpeting, so i'm thinking probably one of the forward footwells in the main cabin. Is it on the drivers side or passenger. I've tried to find it in the TIS service lit. but I've had no luck (found the module itself but no instructions for removal/installation). Thanks

DP09,

Keep us posted on the chip from Mouser (Part Number BTS426L1 vs something else from Mouser, Procedure, Take some Pictures/post them, and Final Outcome).
It will be good feedback for all of us.
