How many miles on your M5?

I'm an e39er (00 540), but have an eye for your style M5. I was wondering the mileages on your cars? Is it worth mid 20s with close to 80K on the clock?

I've got 48K. You might want to inhabit the m5board to get more of your questions answered.

I think mine is worth around mid 20's. (At least I hope, it's kind of depressing how much our M5's have depreciated the last year) I have an 02 with 70k on the clock and BB Tri Flo exhaust.

I wish that were true. I have an 02' with 70k too. Can't imagine it'd go for more than $22k.

Just got mine Friday and have 34,460 on my LMB 2001. price : Priceless (to me)

Hello - I own a "as new" 2000 w/ 0 bemishes of any kind and never seen rain and has only 28K. It also has the eintire S2 package minus the strut tower brace and the brake upgrade. It also has all the options like the PDC, suede headliner, navi and the ultra lite Dinan wheels.

I just bought my M5 and It is a 2001 with 34,643 miles on the clock. I am trying to stay below 35k by the end of the year.

I had 81K Miles when I sold my 2002 M5 this summer. It had NO Vanos issues and didn't burn oil, and ran perfectly. I would NOT buy a 2000 or 2001 model, which were prone to oil burning, carbon deposits, and Vanos problems.
The guy who bought my stock M5 has invested about $20K in upgrades, and runs about 650hp (supercharged). No problems so far...but I wouldn't typically recommend this on 81K mile car. As for price...lower mid 20's is about right for good to very good cond.

This is incorrect. Extensive research done on m5board.com by member wilsodh showed no correlation between model year and seconday air system carbon issue. Also, the 2001 is identical to the 2002 M5 with one exception for NA delivered cars -- in 2002 BMWNA made rear air bags/rear head protection system optional at no cost where it was standard in 2001 and 2003 M5s. Other than that issue which makes the 2001 more desirable to some (since very few 2002 M5s ended up with rear head protection/side airbags), there is essentially no difference between 01 and 02 models.

There is no Vanos issue with 2001 cars that is any different from 2002 or 2003 models. There was a change in 2000 M5s where a mod was made to the Vanos to better hold pressure when the engine is off, and I think cars were retrofitted with this change.

There was a piston ring design change as of 3/00 production for the 2000 model year M5 to reduce oil consumption issues some earlier 2000 model cars experienced. All M5 engines after this date are identical.

Hence 2001-2003 M5s are essentially identical cars excepting the rear airbag issue with 2002 cars and for 2003 you get DVD Navigation.

Again, this is incorrect. The ONLY 2002 M5s that have rear airbags are those that were specifically ordered that way by the dealer or new owner. Somewhere in the range of 90% of 2002 BMWNA delivered 2002 M5s do not have the rear airbags (note when referring to rear airbags this means door airbags and the rear HPS system). I had direct contact with BMWNA back in the day about this issue.

Here is the bottom line on E39 M5 rear airbags by model year:

2000 -- rear door airbags only
2001 -- rear door airbags and rear HPS (head protection system airbags) standard
2002 -- for this year only, the rear airbags (both) were OPTIONAL at no cost, but VERY FEW 2002 M5s have them -- easy to check by looking for the AIRBAG embossing at the top back of door upholstery and the HPS embossing on the C-pillar near the light.
2003 -- same as 2001, standard

All rear DOOR airbags were delivered deactivated and required an owner waiver signature to activate. All rear HPS systems were delivered activated regardless of the state of the door airbags.

That's "the word" on rear airbags on the E39 M5 from BMWNA. When I was searching for an M5 back in 2003, I stumbled onto noticing that not a single 2002 M5 I came across had rear airbags, hence I got to the bottom of this issue.

Exactly. BMWNA freaked out over rear airbag liability briefly and decided at the last minute to delete them as standard equipment for the 2002 model year with the thinking being that if an owner specifically ordered them, he/she would would be on the hook knowing they are there. It was a flawed plan that was undone for the 2003 model year. The 2002 brochures were already printed when they made the decision to make them optional.

Whoa!! Wait a sec!! When did you get an M5??!! WTH??!! CopyCat??!!

With 80 k on it I don't think I would pay above 20. I've seen pristine E39 M5's with 60k on them for way cheaper then that lately. See if you can get them down.

114,000 miles, but not worth too much, being salvage and all...
But that's OK, still runs like a frickin champ!
