Help... 540/M62 Water Pump removal

540 E39'ers, I'm replacing all cooling components this afternoon. I got the radiator, belts, tensioners, pulleys, most hoses and I'm down to the water pump. I got all bolts out and before I wiggle and yank it out (water pump), I was wondering how I ensure I don't also pull out the two metal tubes at the top of the water pump from the back where they connect to the distribution pipe. I don't want to mess with having to get them back in if they accidently come out.

I figured I'd ask before I pull it out. Thanks!

refer to the FAQ of this forum that has pictures and steps to remove it. Basically, there are 2 bolts on each side, remove it and gentally pull the tube out. Make sure not to pull out the tubes that connected to the tube you need to remove.

Ah, thanks! If you're referring to the metal tube in the front of the engine (That has a third Torx bolt as a clamp fastener in the water pump, I did get that one off fine. That one seems to be an air supply line going to a sensor on the passenger side of the engine with a very fragile and brittle plastic air supply line coming from the air pump. Ask me how I know.

I'm actually referring to the two cooling system pipes under the manifold that everyone who has posted posts on water pumps say be careful in not removing. They look like they are only in by friction by o-rings on either end. I did a search in the FAQs, Wiki and DIYs and did not see anything more than just be careful. So I will.

The Zionsville radiator arrived last night. Off to the dealer to pick up the last of the replacement parts. Yesterday was tear down and clean up, today is reassembly. Been taking pics along the way, I'll share when done.

Thanks for responding!

I'm not aware of any special tricks that can be used other than the usual "be careful" you have heard. I tried to be careful with mine but they ended up coming out anyway. I shined some light under the manifold and used a small automotive mirror to get them back in. Just make sure you don't move on until you are positive they are in right. It wasn't too big of a deal though.

You can wiggle it out with the air line in the way, its harder to get the new one in with it there though. You will have a fun time with the gasket falling out every second

All out, no mishaps... I did remove the air line in front of the water pump earlier. I was lucky enough not to pull out the two cooling lines I mentioned. I did squirt the line fitings and around the water pump with a penetrating oil and let it sit for a few minutes. With a few wiggles, it pulled right off...

Thanks all!

Something bad happen today (as it did a year ago when i bought my 540) with a loud clank, my fan broke along with waterpump and the pipe (under manifold) came lose. The bigger pipe came lose, smaller one is still attached in the back of the engine. Do I have to take the manifold off to put it back in or is there a trick to doing it? Thanks in advance. It just seems that I fix one thing and before I put on another 100 miles on the car, something else goes wrong. Just 2 days ago I flushed the cooling system, changed oil, installed new tie rod end, and now this. The car has 139K miles and I have replaced so many parts its ridiculous. I really want to sell it. Car runs perfect and shifts smoothly. I had enough of BMWs. $5800 and its yours.

You should be able to get the pipe properly seated at the rear of the engine using a light and a small mirror.
