Why no E28's?

I've been looking for a decent e28 around Richmond now for a few months. We want a 5 speed and prefer a 535i. I can't find any worth a damn. A fellow down the road has an '85 for 800 bucks, but it needs a little work here and there. Everytime one has come up on craigslist around here, it's either gone that same day or it's junk...

What do I need to look for?! This is very frustrating...

I looked at a red 535i a year or two ago locally and the guy was asking 2500 for it. I checked it out and wanted to drive it. The thing would not start, so I came back a week or so later to see if they fixed it. Still was not fixed, so I asked if they would take an offer on it, which I got a stern no. That car was worth about 300 dollars in my opinion.

My 88 wasn't worth more than the paper title. So that's what I gave the guy....Just hard to find ANY 20 year old car in great shape.

We ended up buying the one down the road for a little less than the guy was asking. We drove it home and need to do a few things to it, mainly the typical things like the tach not working, the check lights on, etc. It's a decent car for the money and I think we'll be happy with it.

My tach, speedo, and and fuel gauge work.

My ODO and Trip ODO and MPG do not.

The E28 is hard to find...it's a very desirable (IMO) engine/model combo and the bottom end is said to be bulletproof. I got lucky and picked up my '88 535is about 3 weeks ago with all the maintenance records, receipts, and even the original window sticker! It had 168k miles on it and ran great (previous owner put new tires on it, got a tune-up, and oil change). Even more of a coincidence was that the owner turned out to be an ex co-worker/buddy of mine (the ad was in Craigslist)! The car is in upper fair to mid-good condition and only cost me $2400. Lots of upgrades including Dinan perf chip, short throw shifter, lowering springs, bilstein rear shocks, new exhaust, and radiator. There's a lot more done to it, I just haven't been able to go through all the paperwork yet. The only major issue I'm fighting is an electrical gremlin that affects the reverse lights and tail lights (running lights). I love that it's almost a classic (5 more years!) and has a lot of personality. Plus it helps that there's a great shop here in Austin, TX that does just BMW. Good luck with your '85 E28!

Well, since I started this thread, I've done a lot of work on my '85 and it's turned into a nice driver...that we are about to sell We just bought a sweet, sweet, sweet '87 535is in Charlottesville. I'm not sure the color name but it's the same eggplant purple that my mother's '03 E46 is and is original. The interior is practically flawless and original, the motor runs great and it has a complete history. I'm buying it from the 3rd owner. New tires, new suspension, short throw shifter recent tune-up...it's almost too good to be true.
