when I bought my E36 it had like 194,000 on it and I just sold it with 225,000 on it. they run good for a long time, but if something does go wrong then you either have to have deep pockets or have to be handy with a wrench. of course make sure you ask questions and what not.

Service Records, service records, service records. If they have these, then maybe if you bump down the price and you should be able to. Also, regardless it's marque alone (BMW) will likely require her to have a good 5 bills ready to spend on various maintenance issues that may/will arise,

It all depends on how well the vehicle was maintained. Since I have both a Blazer and a Bimmer, I don't know that I'd trade off the Blazer (unless I could get another Bimmer for it! )

My 1995 Blazer has 204K+ miles and is still going great. The 1995 318is had 196K miles on it when I bought it last year, and is now at 205K. Both were very well taken care of before I got them, and I continue to make sure they stay that way. The Blazer gets driven 150-200 miles a week, and the Bimmer 300-350 miles a week.

If you've got records for the service history, I wouldn't be too worried. Just be honest with yourself and know that 200k+ is going to have some issues arise that no amount of prior TLC could have prevented.

Mein Auto: 1994 320i manual
My 320i had 160k miles when i got it 2 1/2 years ago at a reasonable price considering it needed a new clutch bearing, estimated at 3 months replacement time. Got it fixed after 2 years because the sound was annoying, not because it wasn't working. Cost AUD995.
Since have spent 695 on new water pump (metal impeller), drive belts etc so the costs are not too bad.
The work was done by an independent bmw mechanic so there is about a 30% labor component here.
200k miles is probably ok if it has been well looked after.

To OP, I think it also depends on how much you plan to drive the car. I would not consider it because I drive 400-800 miles a week, even though my current car has 212K. But the difference is, I've had mine for 90K and know its maintenance history from that point. I agree that you must keep in mind that there will be quite a few maintenance issues to face in the coming miles.

UPDATE- Ok so I went to look at the car, it was green not blue, it had stock kidney grills not the nasty chrome ones. it had tinted windows and the one on the add didn't. I am pretty sure the photo in the add was a different car. it had bad wheel bearings, and sounded like crap, not to mention it had some rear quarter panel/rear door damage. it ran good but this time was a no go.

Good choice if it sounded bad, had damage, and needed work.

my e36 has 272,000 miles. its only broke down once in the 6/7 years i have it. water pump failure(my fault i shoulda changed it)
Dont get me wrong, the suspension bushings have a habit of wearing quickly and the rear wheel bearings go every 20k. but its very reliable. my buddys been driving it for 6 months and he loves it.
1992 E36 1.6litre m40 engine 272,000 miles.

I hope you didn't have to travel far to figure out that someone was trying to pull the wool over your eyes. It's enough to tick you off

I hate wasting my time on cars that aren't properly represented.

I had a 1991 525i that was a Long Island Car, drove hard, braked hard, beat, bruised and tattered...

I drove it to 375,000 Miles, then the water pump went, overheated the engine and I parked it, had it towed, and sold it... The car is still running today to a college girl, 3 years later!

Bum luck that it didn't work out, would've been nice to have the even swap. Keep looking, something will work out.

she really wants a E39, so she is going to save up some money, and tax return and try to buy that. I personally don't want her to sell the blazer, I love the thing, BMW are no bueno in the snow.(with street tires) however it is fun to go out for a little snow drift sesh. It just sucks when you have to get somewhere. Up hill. lol., And no I didnt have to travel to far, only a few miles. She's all "uhhh that's not it, that ones green and has window tint" and I said "well it has to be it, its the only bmw on there street, in front of there house, hey wait didnt the add have some nasty chrome kidney grills??" oh well
