Question Creaking Sounds: 2009 E90

On anything but the smoothest of roads, my 2009 E90 335i creaks. It sounds like the sounds are coming from the doors (seals?), especially in the rear, or it could be the leather-on-leather as the structure flexes. The car has fold-down rear seats. My 2006 E90 330i (also with fold-down rear seats) did not make these sounds.

I have yet to put someone in the back seat to try to isolate the sound.

Anyone else experiencing this creaking sound? Thanks!

Brian

It's likely the rear deck rubbing against the window and tends to be worse when the car is cold. I found spraying some dry Teflon lubricant between the plastic vent and the window quieted the noises for a day or two but then rubbed off.

Only once have I sat back there while someone else drove and I couldn't hear a thing.

Part of the problem is that these cars are dead quiet for the most part so any repetitive noise is amplified.

I have the tools to remove the deck and put some foam tape in there but am waiting for warmer weather and motivation.

Thanks John. I posted this on e90post as well and one of the replies said "it's a known issue--take it to the dealer and have them fix it." I'm waiting for some elaboration and will cross reference that post here later.

I had three creaking sounds from my E90.

1. The rear seats, lift up the seats and you'll see the "hook" where they attach, it's plastic vs metal, so I wrapped the metal hooks with felt and that cured that one.

2. Rear deck, I picked up a piece of vacuum tubing the length of the window and shoved it between the deck and the glass, sound never came back.

3. The flock around the doors and the weatherstripping, I picked up some Krytox lube on amazon and massaged the stuff into the seals and the flock, the sound never returned.

The E9x series really needs some enhancement to the structure in the rear, in my opinion.

Hope that helps.

All of the above are certainly likely culprits. However, about 2 weeks ago my E93 developed creeks and groans from the rear - sounded like a 20 year old Buick. I called my service department and they claim there are several bushings "back there" in the suspension that will sometimes need some lubrication. I haven't taken it in yet - but I will have to do that since it's driving me nuts.

thekurgan - do you have any idea of the size of tubing you used to quiet the creak? I used some tubing (clear plastic) at one point but it was actually causing creaks after a while as it stuck/unstuck from the window. This leads me to believe that I chose a tubing that was too small a diameter. The stuff is dirt cheap to try again (and much easier than ripping the rear deck apart) so . . . ahem . . . what size is your tube?

You're right, it is dirt cheap, I picked up some 1/2" tubing, it was pretty soft, just vacuum tubing, not fuel tubing. I lubed it with Krytox and gently slipped it down with a flexible plastic ruler. The dealer wanted to take the entire rear section apart, but without having folding seats, they were bound to create more problems, and they admitted that fact as well. The tubing works in the cold and warm weather. The other major creaking is the doors, Krytox is a wonder lube, but it is very expensive.

I'm pretty sure the tubing I used was not 1/2" and I certainly didn't lube it with anything before installing it. I have some of those plastic chopsticks like they use at Vietnamese noodle shops and the fat end of those is good for pushing the tubing down into that space without scratching my tint.

Thanks for all the replies people! Apparently this issue is well known. I'll try lubricating my door seals as I believe that is the real culprit (so far). In case anyone's interested, here's my post on e90post: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=234248

UPDATE: Last week I took my 2009 E90 335i to Concord (CA) BMW for an oil change (low mileage) and to have them diagnose and correct the 1994 Grand Am-like creaking.

They wound up replacing the door seals on all four doors (they are called "Window Guides" on the repair ticket). I was told a TSB existed (sorry, didn't get its number) regarding this issue. My car no longer creaks!!

For reference, the part numbers are 51-34-7-060-257/258 for the left and right rear, respectively, and 51-33-7-060-241/242 for the left and right front, respectively.

The car has been perfect since...thanks to all who provided advice/guidance.

Brian

That's very surprising they have a TSB for a 2009. I wonder if the TSB applies to all years' E90s. I would have guessed it was the rear vent piece, as the dealer fixed 90% of the creaking sound of mine by felting the vent piece.

I know what you mean about the TSB and I'm sorry I didn't get its details. It probably does cover years prior to 2009. And, it was the door seals on my car. I haven't heard a peep from the rear vent piece.

Noise could be coming from door seals rubbing against the body of the car or the rear parcel shelf.. Apply any good (dry silica) rubber lubricant to all the door seals, that should fix the problem but remember the seals will start creaking again in few months so you need to keep applying rubber lubricants once in a while (probably every 4-5 months).. There is an official service bulletin to fix noises coming from rear parcel shelf/vent area, just take it to the dealer and they should be able to take care of it... If your dealer is good and know what they're doing, then I don't see it how/why they'll create more noises... but if they're hacks, then I can't promise you, it might come out to be worse than before.
