Interior Peeling??

How quickly do you see signs of peeling on the soft touch and other surfaces. 1 year, 2 year, never??

I was just curious because that seems like a real turn off to have a nice $50k with a peeling interior

How many of you guys have an interior that isn't peeling at all??

1.5 years, no peeling at all

None here, and we're the 2nd owner (bought CPO) for a 2006.

that's reassuring.

I guess it seemed a lot more common than it really was because only people with the problem actually posted.

I'm looking to buy a new car, and am heavily considering the e90/e92, but the peeling worried me

Due to environmental concerns many manufacturers have this issue. It is normally exacerbated by certain skin treatments (moisturizer, suntan lotion, etc) and so if you don't use a lot of that stuff it may never happen to you.

they replace a lot of that soft touch stuff when they sell a CPO car.

The driver's door handle has peeled once again! This is gonna be the second time it'll be replaced.

The soft touch paint is a nice touch but it peels or tears rather easily. It will probably happen to you sooner or later, if your car is under warranty apparently it's covered (although I've yet to bring it up at my dealership) if not there are some pretty inexpensive diys out there. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but it happens to more people than it doesn't so count on yours peeling.

It is the first time I hear about this problem. None of people with BMWs I know ever complained about it.

I don't even understand how it can happen. I only touch the door handle when I close the door. How does it get scratched so bad??? In the pictures it looks like someone actually tried to scratch them

This is a common problem and the fact that there is a service bulletin just for the peeling paint is evidence of that. You only know a small portion of the bmw owner community, just because you've never heard of it doesn't mean it isn't a big problem. It peels because it is just the nature of the soft touch paint they use. I'm guessing they did not expect this to happen in the long run but it seemed like a great idea up front. And why would I intentionally scratch my paint... Just to get it replaced? That's a dumb idea and isn't worth the hassle imo and my dealership has yet to recognize it as a problem... Also you car is an 08, they've either addressed and fixed the problem by now or it hasn't had enough wear and tear to show signs of it. Most of the cars that are experiencing the peeling paint are 06 cars.

This is precisely what has happened to my vehicle. It doesn't bug me, and should be easy to replace.

I did not insinuate you actually scratched the paint. I just said it appears as if someone tried to scratch it. Just like when I saw a car with a lot of dings on aluminum trim pieces: I know it is soft, and I have one or two tiny scratches myself. But that car looked like someone took a nail and hit the trim with it all over. I simply couldn't understand how it could happen. Maybe the driver was wearing a medieval knight armour

We had the same problem on our 2006 330i, the dealer replaced both door panels for free.

+1 on my '06 as well (9/05 build date).

thanks for all the replies,

it seems like about 50% of the cars peel and 50% don't. The majority of the peelers seem to be 06s, while the newer ones don't seem to peel as easily,

am i right??

It is my understanding that my replacement part (which was made standard in the '07 model year), the color is molded into the part where in the '06 part, the color was painted on. While I have had no problem with my replacement, I have only had it for a couple of months.

on my old bimmer around 3.5 years.

none in my E93, although the steering wheel is already starting to peel in my X5. :/

Steering wheel was peeling (2 years old), BMW replaced soft-touch. door handle also peeling, I will address at brake job in a month or two.
