Follow up question..When did you do your first oil change? 15,000+/- or before?

I think changing it earlier(prior to 15K) on the first one is a good idea. What have you to say?

On both of my e9x, I paid for the 1st change myself at around 5-6000 miles.

BTW both times, my SA asked me "you know you don't need to right?".

I'm getting my oil changed on Saturday and I'm only at 1200 miles I figure, since its brand new and everything since its past the break in period, I'd get it changed and hopefully the gunk will go away and I'll have a fresh car

It's really up to however you feel about it and nobody will ever really be able to tell you what it needs to be. There are too many threads about this already. :P

The fact is that you can change it whenever you want and it will never hurt the car, so if you want to pay for the extra insurance then sure, go ahead. You really should make up your own mind about this since you will get a broad spectrum of answers in here.

Well put. This is similar to all the "what color should I get" threads. It's strictly an individual choice/preference.

My first oil change was done somewhere between 1200-1300 miles. My next oil change wasn't until my one year mark which happened around 12,500 or so.

+1 to this topic being discussed many times over...

Break in oil change at 1,200 miles, and every 7,500 miles there after. Everyone knows the BMW maintenance plan is way too infrequent.

Shoot, if nothing else, change the oil filter between scheduled oil changes. That takes what, 2 minutes? My dealer charged me $80 to change the oil, my local garage charges me $10 if I bring in the parts ('cause I ain't putting no name stuff in this car).

1200 (myself), 5K (myself), 11K (dealer, free), 15K (dealer, free).
Planning next one at around 20-21K or 6 months.

I drive around 11K a year, so the dealership changes my oil free of charge every 11K miles (annual change) and then a few thousand miles later again when the computer tells to do it.

2,300 miles. I paid ~$80. BMW Indy shop.

Then again at 10,000 during the annual oil change (under warranty). I've penciled it again @ 15,000 miles (under warranty).

Good luck.

My 2008 was a CPO (Delivered in Dec 07). Do they change the oil during a CPO? I'm assuming any BMW can lookup the records but....

From my understanding this is what happens when a car comes in from a lease:
  • Oil and other fluids are changed (this is cheap maintenance) - the sensors are reset
  • They check the engine/body over (they are supposed to give you a checklist). You should still check the body of the car and even have a 3rd party mechanic check out the engine. For example they missed my adaptive headlights (don't turn left).
  • They check the tires/breaks - if the tires/breaks meet a certain thickness they leave them alone, otherwise replace them. I am sure some dealers may try to skim so you may want to inspect this also.

But every dealer I spoke to (20 of them) all said they replce the fluids without question. Given that, if they didn't then the sensor is most likely not reset and it will warn you.

It is not a matter of opinion. It has been demonstrated for 15 years that oil changes once a year is fine with synthetic. Adopted by Mercedes, Porsche and BMW. Doing more is overkill and stubbornness.

And your point would be...?
As you may have noticed I haven't got 15K on the clock yet but I've already done 4 oil changes. Why? I like doing oil changes. So there!
What else can I do? As another poster wrote in part, I can't adjust valves, I can't reset (dual) points, I can't adjust triple Webers, and I can't Bondo one year old rusted out rocker panels. I can't swap in a Clarion 8-track tape deck, I can't add door speakers and won't add purple fluorescent lights under the dash. The Coupe would look awful with Moon wheel covers, doesn't need traction bars, and you couldn't even see a set of M/T valve covers if I slapped a set on.
So I'm screwed. You boy racers and your chip mods have no idea what a real man went through to get HP back in the day. I do oil changes. It's all I've got left. Now leave me alone before I whack you with a grease stained set of genuine Hurst fuzzy dice. I have an oil change to get to.

Do some searches and you will find that the most solid data points to the fact that you can follow your OM and save your money. My first oil change was 1 year at 10k because I hadn't yet hit 15k.

I stick to what BMW states to do - and I get rid of the car before 50,000 mile warranty is up.
My thought is that BMW must know something, otherwise they have a whole lot of CPO cars - under extended warranty - that are destined for major issues...and I don't believe that is the case!
