new Sdrive30 vs Lotus Elise

I haven't driven neither but would like to see what's your thoughts on them, pros and cons.
I've seen new Z4 in person, it looks nice but I'm not too impressed... although it usually took me a while to start liking the new design

TO me, they seem to have very similar characteristic, both 2 seater convertible with great handling priced at 45k. Obvious Z4 has more power but Elise is much lighter, and kinda exotic.

new '09 Elise Purist Edition retail for $44,920

You are looking at two very opposite ends of the spectrum. The Elise is for a driving enthusiast without comfort requirements. It is a go-kart of a car and a blast to autoX but wouldn't be my choice for a daily driver as getting in/out isn't graceful and the ride can wear on you. The new Z4 is even more of a luxury car than the last version. I came from an AP1 S2000 which is more of an Elise-type car than the Z4 so I've lived the difference. As a lighter car the Elise can excite with a four-banger, while the tin-roofed Z4 needs its six.

Both are great cars but your reason for buying it would be the deciding factor. If it is a spare car for fun or events, the Elise would be my choice. As a daily driver the Z4 wins by a mile because of its (relative) comfort. Unless, of course your intent is to make sure that only car people want to be your passenger. Then the Elise meets your needs then!

If you're even considering the Z4, you want the Z4.

People who buy Elises didn't even consider buying a Z4. And I don't know anyone who uses an Elise as a DD.

One of my colleagues used his Élise as a DD and it nearly destroyed his back. It's a cool-looking car however.

if they offered Elise with dual clutch transmission(you could also replace seats with comfy Recaro if your back desires so...)
After that it sounds like comfy go-kart that can be considered as DD...but looks like Lotus doesn't share my views about transmission

Many of us prefer a stick shift for commuting... in other words, the transmission is the MOST DD-able part of an Elise. It's everything ELSE that's hard to live with!

The Z4 without the M adaptive suspension is very soft- not even worth mentioning in the same breathe as a Lotus. The M Adaptive on Sport + makes the car as stiff as the previous car but that is about it.

The target market of the Z4 is the same people interested in the MB SL. The past cars were viewed as too harsh/bumpy etc. by the majority of buyers so BMW softened it up a good deal.

This is NOT going to be the same level of involvement as the past car, it has been numbed for the buying public.

An Elise is the direct opposite (180 degree polar opposite) it is a driver's car and says forget comfort, luxury and all that nonsense. It rides like it is on rails but is horrible to drive on most US roads.

A person looking to buy a $90k SL is not looking at a Z4, to them it is an overpriced Miata.
Seriously, thats like saying someone who is looking to buy an S550 would now consider a 335i.

That's what I'm implying, the outcomes from the reviews could be bad (just see the Car and Driver one).

Easy there, I'm sure Mapezzul meant the SLK. The $50k roadster Mercedes makes.

OP, have you driven an Elise? Once you do, you'll make up your mind which you want.

I don't quite know about that.

An SL and a Z4 are much more similar than an S and a 3er are. For one, that extra foot in length is mostly wasted on a 2-seat folding-hardtop roadster, where a foot is huge in a sedan.

Also, you can option the new Z4 up north of US$68k. The Z4 is definitely cheaper than the SL, but how much of the SL's price is really in luxury features you can't get on a Z4? Maybe some butt massagers and cooled seats, maybe a night vision cam?

I think it's pretty clear where BMW is trying to take the Z4. Which is why I think it's equally clear a Z2 is going to be introduced with a soft top.

Thanks... I slipped up there (even though the SL or SLK is the competition based on options etc,). Thanks for sticking up for me!

Easy there buddy, the only over priced Miata BMW made was the Z3. I forgot to type a letter (K).... I happen to know exactly what I am talking about.

BMW did not design this thing to out drive the competition, the past failures and complaints with the Z3 and Z4 pretty much showed what not to do to make the car a sales success (especially ///M versions) though the ///M is one of the best performance cars out there. They realized this and went more along the lines of a cruising car. Do you need the graphic about how much they softened this thing up? Mind you the 2008 past generation described is the standard suspension.

Agree. The new Z4 is a competitor to the MB SL and SLK and will be considered a bargain at its price point while providing a similar level of performance, comfort, and luxury to the SL.

I'll miss my E85 Z4. A new 3000 lb bmw with a top that folds down in 10 seconds and has considerable trunk space? I'd sign up again.

But Mapezzul is right, BMW needs to actually make money on it.

thanks for all the comments. No, I haven't driven neither. With the crappy road around NYC, sometimes I even feel the ride is too harsh in my 540 with sport package. Don't think I can deal with the stiffer ride in Elise, it looks so good tho.
