What can i do to make my 318i faster?

Hey, I just got a 1995 e36 [318i]. its in great condition considering its age, and the handling is superb, but if it was any slower it would be moving backwards. I get passed on the highway by minivans. I looked into getting a cold air intake but I wasn't sure if that would make a noticeable difference to the acceleration of the car. any ideas how I can make her faster, without spending a ****load of money?

I have a '94 318iS, and I'm telling you there's nothing you can do and it'd be much easier to appreciate the car for what it is. It's a tiny little 1.8L 4-Cyl. A great engine nonetheless, but you get none of the power present in the 325's/328's/M's.

If you're really craving more power and horsies, sell the 318 and get a similarly-aged 325/328.

Or, if you're like me and for some reason just love the 318 and developed a deep (and expensive) connection to it, keep it and appreciate it for what it is: a gas-sipping corner carver.

And btw, the 318's normally don't recognize the air intakes and they have been known to mess up/throw off the MAF. Not to mention it wouldn't make much difference anyway, except for a nicer sound maybe.

Upgrade the suspension if you haven't already and keep it maintained, they're still beautiful cars with superb handling, but like I said if raw speed is your thing you purchased the wrong whip.

^ Seriously?

OP, you aren't going to get much power out of your 318, learn to love it for what it was designed for, not focus on its failings. If you want power, you should look into selling it for a 325 or M3. Do watch out, you'll probably get some hairdryer comments on here....

j/k

Seriously though, there isn't a whole hell of a lot you can do with an M42/M44 to get more power without going forced induction. I dont know how good you are with working on your car, but you can pick up an M50/M52 motor set (engine, tranny, clutch, DME etc..) for less than $1000. If you do the swap yourself, (it isn't nearly as difficult as you'd think) that will be the same power as supercharging your 318 for about 1/3 the money, and you'll have a whole lot of potential for more power. The inline 6 family has a ridiculous aftermarket.
Now if you really have a few bucks to spend you could always spring for an S50/S52.....

Really didn't want to open this.
As a 318 owner I am going to say sell and buy a 325 or above

drop that bitch like 4 inches and debadge the hell out of it. then put an m3 emblem on it. if thats not enough, yank out that old "OE" grill and put some chicken wire in there! thatll help make it faster! also, you can put a 17,000 shot of nitrous with a pink/purple purge kit. ooh and than install a badass sound system that sounds like a swarm of bees form the outside. BAM! there you have it. a fast 318i. or, you could just sell it for a 325-328...

Unfortunately there isn't any "real" normally aspirated engine performance upgrades if your not willing to spend a ****load of money.
Even with the mods you'll still have a bit more than your hands full with a M3. But according to the figures which were achieved with these mods you'll most definitively change the way that these M50 guys are looking at a 4 banger.

Take the badge off keep it, then sell the car and buy a zhp. Then slap the 318 badge on there and youll have the fastest 318 out there!

there seem to be this kind of people who want BMW, think they are all fast, than just buy the cheapest one and most abundunt, and then get all dissapointed because it's too slow. Do you people even test drive cars before you give money away?? I don't mean to sound harsh, but I just don't understand you kids. It's a pretty serious deicion, one would think wiht the internet around you'd at least find out before you buy that the 318 is just economical and slow 3 series. It looks like other, but it's not fast. AT ALL. And since speed is clearly important for you, why not learn about the model line up and than pay a bit more but get what you like.

In short, NO, you won't get more power out of it. 318is is only sport 4 cyl model E36 had and that's a nice engine but they tend to go at around 200000kms so .. if you want more power, sell it and get something with 6 cylinders.

Where did you get that preposterous idea? 200000 kms= ~124,000 miles. They are barely broken in at 124K miles. Mine has 210K miles and shows no sign of quitting. There are plenty of others with well over 200K miles and going strong, at least as strong as a hair dryer can go

Let's not confuse "fast" with "quick". A 318 is pretty "fast" (top speed), but it won't get to top end "quick". I don't need a 1/4 miler. I love it as an Interstate cruiser....and at 30 mpg, too.

Just do an engine swap if you love the car.. if not sell it and get an upgraded model with the inline 6.
