IMO there is much more to the Z8 vs Z4 comparison than performance. To me there is no comparison, the Z8 is a work of art, its 8 years old, and looks as good today as it did then, it was a labor of love, no expense spared car, limited numbers. The quality, fit and finish are exemplary. It is a future classic, and it 8 years it'll still look good, but the 2009
Z4 will be just a Z4.

+1 - You are buying into the BMW marketing hype if you seriously compare the Z8 with the new Z4.

+2 (But this has nothing to do with hype.)

I agree as well.

However, some people are quick to point out the performance. And, in a one-on-one comparision, today's new twin-turbo Z4 has matched the Z8. Of course, we all know that the Z8 is a classic semi-exotic while the Z4 is just a standard production car that will never achieve "greatness" like its predecessor.

There is a Z8 here in Thomasville, I saw it in a garage just yesterday! Bad to the bone boy for sure.

After seeing the older Z8, I can see where some would try and make a comparison. But the classic lines of the Z8 over shadow the new Z4 by a long shot. IMHO. My choice would be the older Z8.

You have to see a Z8 to understand its magnificence, infact I dont think you see it, you behold it....
You know you are a car guy when something special makes your arm hairs stand up, you shiver and get the weak knee feeling like looking over the side of a 50story building. Thats how I feel when I see a Z8. Few other cars do that to me, perhaps only super rare cars like an SLR or 300SL Gullwing (yes, when I am 55 I will probably have a Merc but not now...). So to anyone who is comparing a Z8 to a mundane production car, its purely academic and a paper excercise.
Anyone know anyone around NC that has one and could give me a ride??
I have decided that I need to list cars I am passionate about and make it a mission to drive or ride in one. Thats the kind of memories I want to reminisce on when I am old, you know, when you have your grand kids on your lap and you are viewing these pictures on an archaic intel pentium in a format called jpeg!

Obviously the point of the comparison (and as I stated before) is the numbers and all that, not the fact the Z8 was a hand built car. Any hand built car is going to look better than a mass produced car just for the rarity.

But the fact BMW has matched the performance of its HALO car in a production car in such a short time is fairly astonishing and is worth pointing out.

Likewise!

I'm flying to Italy on Monday for a Bridgestone tire launch... and then back to Germany mid-month for the launch and first drive of the Porsche Panamera.

Mike,

I'd like hear how you like the Panamera. That should be more fun than the Lexus launch - the hybrid?
