Dual phone microphones in roof?

I checked the archives and found nothing, so here goes...

I have what appears to two individual telephone microphones located above each front seat.

Question 1 - Should both work? It appears that the passenger side microphone does not. (It may be an empty plug, perhaps.)

Question 2 - If the passenger side microphone is nonfunctional, has anyone determined if wiring is already in place to support installation of a microphone in this location?

Any advice/thoughts/experience greatly appreciated!

Driver8,

I looked closely at mine ('07) a while back, and noticed that the passenger side grate is simply a dummy cover, I imagine so that both sides match. I too was hoping that it was an additional mic, but callers can generally hear my passengers if they wish to participate in the conversation...even from the back seat.

I can't answer the question about the passenger side being pre-wired, but I would guess it isn't.

/TCP

the passenger side is just a dummy MIC, the only real mic is only on the drivers side of the roof

I wonder, if by putting a blank there, BMW intended to provide a way to upgrade to an additional microphone?

I think that might be for the lefthand drivers for the european models maybe? It would make it easy so they can produce one product for either countries. That's my guess.

Could just be purely asthetic, for symmetrical purposes...

Agree plus it is cheaper and more efficient to have just one headliner with two holes than to have two headliners with a single hole.
