Bottom brake lights fail?

Hi, I just recently purchased a 2003 bmw 325i and I think I'm having a problem with the brake lights. On the main brake light there is a top, a middle(turning light) and a bottom light. The top and middle (turning) lights are working, but for some reason the bottom light isn't coming on. Am I having a brake light problem, or does that light only come on for certain reasons. By the way, I'm having the same issue with both right and left tail lights.

This link is to a web photo of a bmw with the lights working where mine are failing.

Thanks!

The bottom lights are the brake Force Display lights (at least on my04 and up, have to check your production date). The top lights are the normal brake lights, the bottom ones come on when you stop hard, or when the top bulbs are dead. One could swap the contacts in the taillight connector to get the opposite effect?
