E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993. |

Fan Clutch
The fan clutch just crapped out again in my BMW.
Not a huge issue, but two have gone in just one year. Once on my 86 red one (now the parts car) and now on my 85. Begs me to ask the question, do they just die after twenty or so years? How have they held up for the rest of you? Last edited by 1979Marshall; 07-28-2009 at 08:32 AM. |

The silicone fluid leaks out the front (the grimy dirt there is a big clue) and as a result lose their effectiveness.
I swapped my factory original fan clutch on the 91 this year. |

I'll be doing that myself this weekend....
Just sucks as I now have to modify my hours based off traffic untill the weekend and will be getting up at 4. Three cheers for coffee! |

Changed the fan clutch in my '88 this year, and my '89 needs it done now, so the 20 year lifespan sounds about right.

My '87 got a new FC last year, at just about the 20 year milestone, but I have no proof that the clutch I replaced was original.

I use one too. Its a horrid 2 hour affair half on back roads and highways. Its nice to find gas, food, and alternate routes, plus your eta.
Personally I like seeing the ETA slowly decrease due to excessive speeds. |

haha nah I actually ride a fixie beach cruiser to work, this was actually on the way back from registering the beater in my name. I am chronically lost in San Antonio, I've never lived in a big city before so I always have the GPS "just in case".

i think mine was still good. i just took it off and threw in an electric fan hooked up to a toggle switch in cab. during the colorado winters, it helped warm the engine, and save on gas while playing.

now i would expect at least an old school 10 speed, but not a beach cruiser! highly disappointed.

10-speed's ftmfl. if you cant do it in one gear ratio you shouldnt do it at all. cruiser > any 10-speed. Quote:

To me a fixie bike means there is a hipster kid that can't figure out how to adjust his gear train.
![]() That said, I've ridden one, and got a kick out of it. But man, I like coasting. |

fixies are a blast. i only rode track fixies on streets and trying to stop fast was a major challege. thats why im getting the specialized vegas, fixie or single speed option, and brakes.

Its okay. We won't tell your friends you've riden one. Its not like they give you the most bang for the buck in hot rodding though. If you ever want to start really messing around with an engine with out much cash involved, start there. Bike and mopeds were what I did before cars. Still kept my single spped "chopper" and just restored my old railegh supercourse for commuting to school. Still mess around with my vespas motor. Love that stuff. Then there are those hipsters ruining it for me. First they took my flannel. Then my classic bike. Asses. More reason to stay in the garage. |

Along with the crumbled polyurthane engine mount. And the 20 year old air flow meter also took a dump. All this after waiting 6 months to get my car back from full interior restore...

I have a low mile E36 fan clutch for sale. It has an E36 fan on it (obviously) but you can reuse your E30 fan with it, it bolts up. (I know for sure because I've done it before)
PM me if your interested.
