Cost of engine rebuild???

What would you expect to pay to either have an E53 3.1 engine rebuilt?

Or

Buying a remanufactured engine and haveing it installed?

Both of these jobs done by a non dealer mechanic...

Have you considered a used engine from a dismantler? There are some great bargains in that area, but it is a bit of a chance. It all depends on your X5, year, condition, and how much you want to spend on it IMHO. The way body repair prices are today, virtually any kind of an accident on an older car makes it a "total" and the insurance company (hopefully not yours) pays you high book, loss of use, and then they sell the car to a wrecker (oops, "dismantler") for parting out. Much cheaper than either a rebuild, or a remanufactured engine, like about a third! Good luck.

Hey intreseting, I hadn't thought of that. My engine is running pretty good it is using oil at 1 qt in 2500 miles. The engine was abused before I rescued it and gave it some love. I was just wondering so I can prepare myself if it goes... It has 93K now and for all I know it will go 300K but, people have been scaring me with dealer horror stories of $7,000 to $10,000.
