Suspicious odometer readings

Is it possible to roll it back on the X3?

I'm looking at an 05 X3 with 26K miles reading on the odometer.
Running an auto check report, this was listed as a discrepancy.
Auto check's explanation, isn't very convincing.
Any tips or hints appreciated.

The odometer kilometres/mileage is stored in 4 or 5 different computer places in the vehicle. If there is a discrepancy a tamper * will show up in the instrument cluster.

Hmmm, tell me more. An asterisk shows up in the instrument cluster?

Is there a way for the people who tampered with it to disable that indication?

I drove up to the dealership today, but was told by the salesman that the vehicle wasn't available for showing because it had to be taken in for an under warranty a/c repair/problem.

Which I took with a grain of salt, of course.

He will call me back whenever the vehicle returns from repairs, which he expected would be a day.

It's a Toyota dealership and apparently their service department couldn't handle the "a/c problem".
