Bike Rack Advice Needed

I need some advice.....

We are taking a trip and are putting a rooftop carrier on our '06 x3. We are looking to put 2 adult and 2 kids bikes on the back. Not having the hitch on the back, are there any racks anyone can recommend that attach to the back?

In the future we will look to add a hitch but with leaving in 2 weeks, the ability to do that is zilch.

Recommendations? Advice? Any is appreciated!

I have the Yakima Holdup 2. You can get an extension for two additional bikes.

I've hauled our two bikes hundreds of miles without any problems.

Putting it together in two weeks is doable but not cheap.

We are looking at a compact SUV and one of the reasons is hauling our bikes with a hitch on trips and to go riding at parks etc.

2 adults and 2 kids. Seeing the above pictures with 2 bikes...I am wary of adding another 2 bikes. It would stick way out from the back.

Anyone do this or have pics? I like the hitch solution as it is easy to load/unload the bikes vs. the roof. I guess I could add one to the roof also and have 2 up and 2 back. Argh.

I lock 2 bikes inside the X3 with the rack I made, only fold a bigger half of the back seat, so I can carry 2 passengers. And in your situation, I think you also put the rest 2 bikes on the roof. I would assume this way, the bikes are relatively secure than using hitch.

that Yak holdup looks pretty good - but if a hitch is out, I'd go with 4 up or 2 and 2 - check out Thule & Yak to see if they have a trunk rack to fit the X3 - with the 58" Thule load bars you probably can get 4 up topside - and I think I've seen 4 up top on the roads - good luck !!
