Clickity Clickity tap tap 535 i

Hello everyone!
I have a question,
My 1985 535i has a clicking and tapping noise . Seems to be coming from the back on the valve cover (the tap) and clicking almost sounds near one of the injectors?
it idles a little funny kind of going up and down ( slightly ) but runs fine and does not seem to have loss of power or anything like that. I can hear the tapping both at an idle and also during acceleration.

Oh where to begin?

Have you adjusted the valves? that could be it.

The injectors can be quite loud. One of them might be louder than the others. As the other poster mentioned, when was the last time the valves were adjusted? If you don't know it might be a good time to do it. Not too hard, make sure to get a Bentley (publisher, not the car) manual. These are invaluable for these cars.
