2006 X3 Exhaust Drone

Hi guys,
We purchased an 2006 X3 recently. It was not until after the pruchase did we notice an irritating drone that comes with the truck when cruising around 50-55 or when the RPM's are between 1800-2200. I've read this is common among the 2006's, but I have not found anything mentioning a fix, other than disconnecting the vacuum valve in the exhaust which most say makes it worse. Does anyone know of a more permanent solution? Will replacing the muffler fix the drone? Thanks...and awesome forum.

Did you look to see if the exhaust valve mod has already been done? It's possible the original owner did it and it is still that way.

Is it a drone or more like a clatter? That's how mine got started - clatter at cruising speed and low idle, then it started making noise at cold start-up. Mine ended up being, like a lot of X3 owners, the hose to the muffler was slightly torn. the dealer fixed mine under warranty. If you are out of warranty check the hose for cracks

I had a similar issue on my 2007 X3. I would hear a clatter at cold starts from the muffler. It was the flap/vacuum on the exhaust. Fixed under warranty.

I know exactly what you are talking about. It feels more when I disconnect the servo that keeps the valve closed, I like it for a while but I try to keep the revs up that point. Check if the valve closes when you start the car.

Thanks for the responses guys, I will check the valve to see is it is working. Its definetly a drone rather than a clatter. I dont believe there is anything wrong with exhaust as it is very quite at idle. Might just be something we have to deal with. Thanks again for the responses.

My 06 had the almost same problem. Here's what my dealer did to repair it under warranty:
Cause: Exhaust Flap in Rear Muffler is making noise. Found a leak in the vacuum supply hose.
Correction: Replace vacuum hose. Road test, ok now.

After they replaced the vacuum hose, the exhaust drone noise at around 2000rpm near 80km/h(50 mph) is also gone. Hope this info is helpful.
