Looks like my radio is locked

I have a BMW X3 and I can just manipulate my radio and cd from the steering wheel.
Does somebody knows if I have to press any thing in the panel to unlock my radio cd player?
None of the options in the panel works, I just can up or down the volume from the steering wheel.

Nothing that I know of.

Try using the radio with the engine off and no key in the ignition - just press the ON-OFF button and see if you can adjust volume in that mode.

If you can't, then I would say some circuit in the radio has gone kaput.

If you can - it rules out the basic radio/CD itself and isolates the problem to the module that supports the steering wheel controls.

The radio and cd work with the engine off, but I am not able to search songs, or use anything in the radio panel. It works with the steering wheel eventhough the engine is off.
I will apreciate if somebody can help me.

Yes, but what happens with:
- no key in the ignition
- radio turned on by pushing its power button

Your steering wheel controls are then disabled.
(There is no way they can work in that mode, and this might possibly reset your radio, so that the buttons on it work again - although I would be surprised.)

I would try disconnecting the battery for a while to see if it resets itself. When did it start doing that?

I have had an issue with my radio locking up due to the bluetooth module. I disconnect and then reconnect the large connector to the bluetooth module and it fixes the problem.

I have also had an issue with the steering wheel buttons (and other things) not working. This was fixed by replacing the ignition switch.
