2001 740il oil filter o-ring

On two occasions about a month apart i have had the o-ring on the oil filter housing blow by and have to be replaced. Has anyone had this problem and if so is it an indicator of another problem.

What kind of filter? Some people have recently reported problems with non-OE filter kit o-rings not being quite the right size and causing leaks. Just to check, I'd try a real BMW one from the dealer next time and see if it seals up better.

I've not had the problem with Mahle or Mann boxed filter kits, but it might be worth trying a BMW boxed one just in case.

I have a 2001 X5 with the 4.4 engine. On two occasions I have had leaks when I used Purolator filters with their undersized o-rings. The leak would only occur when the temperature was below freezing and would stop once the oil / engine temperature rose enough to expand the o-ring. Do not use Purolator o-rings on a BMW!
